The lettering and the spaces HAVE to be a certain size....but you can trim the plate right down to the letters and it will be fine

No you can't. There is a set size for a number plate and for the lettering etc. It also states in the regulations the minimum distance between the letters and the border of the plate.

£30 fixed penalty for non conforming number plates.

Check the dvla website, it has all the info on there.

Here's my old saff

And here's my new saff, a fair bit smaller than my old one, but doesn't look it. Think it's about half the size of a standard plate

Nope not in the slightist.
But generally the Old Bill just tell you to change it sometimes they will give you a producer type thing which you have to get stamped at an MOT station to say you have changed it to a regulation size one.
The absolute worst they can do is give you a £30 fine.
I've never had a fine and only once had to take it to an MOT station.
If you do get pulled for it just asked them if they have got anything better to do and if they have caught any real criminals today! They love that, makes them Laugh everytime
