Default 2.9 Granada auto box using a lot of oil

A neighbour has a 1990 2.9 auto Granada. It runs fine and the auto box is working OK. It is using about two pints of trans fluid a week. It doesn't appear to be leaking as there are never any puddles under the car. Any ideas?

might be the cooler thats in the radiator, but you normally get emulsified oil in the gearbox.

He's been told the torque converter is burning it. I can't see this as that would surely produce soot and clog everything up. I'll suggest the breather to inlet manifold valve, I didn't know they had one.
