Ive done the same, bought a cheap puma and rebuilt it for track days and should be ready in a couple of weeks.

Let the fun begin

Neil's puma isnt quite standard its chipped it turns out, the sneaky bastard!

But then so is my clio

Doesnt give it anymore power really in my case just gives it a few more hundred rpm out of the bends.

Just to fill out what Dan has said

The 1.6 Zetec-SE is very good for tuning. ( as is the rest of the range, same principles can be applied to any of them, 1.25, 1.4, 1.7 )

The main restirction is the breathing, a 4-2-1 ( or 4-1 for track cars ) and a decent exhaust makes a huge difference, but once combined with a set of cams ( Shawspeed ), timed for power rather than emmissions , heavy duty rod bolts, some stiffer valve springs and a remap ( removing rev limit ) should see you comfortably over 140bhp.

The stock 1.6 inlet is good for 150bhp and the standard head and valve sizes are good for nearly 200bhp.

The Puma has the same chassis as a Mk5 Z-S fiesta ( which has a wider track and stiffer shell than other Mk5's ), altho the Puma shell is stiffer still.

Ace fun.

Stiffer valve springs aren't really needed if just using cams (will need them if using bodies though), but the HD big end bolts are if raising the limit. Mine now revs to 7800rpm.

I made 134bhp 120ft/lb with SS4's with the valve clearances way out and not timed to its full potential! Mine has now been sorted and will hopefully be getting it back on the rollers soon to see what difference its made!

Depends on the cam and rev limit as to the springs.

I cant see how just bolting a set of throttlebodies on will change what stiffness of spring you need all else remaining equal. I think you may mean changing the spec of cam and adding TB's

I am going on about SS4 cams that Jon uses, SS2 are a less aggressive cam, SS3's will need ITB's to make the most of them anyway. But if running a set of SS4's from ShawSpeed, uprated valve springs are not needed. If you ran a set of SS4's and bodies you will then need to fit uprated valve springs, im only going off what Jon @ ShawSpeed has told me

Revving to 8000rpm when on bodies which is why valve springs are uprated.

Was! Just bought it off again and stripped down engine. Cambelt slipped a toof, and it looks like it's picked up some shit in the oil so one of bearings is a little scored so just going to give it a good freshen up.

Car is going back to standard inside and out now, fancy something comfyish and nippy. So this should do the job!
