Mine was running the following

Brand new ford crate engine
K&n cone air filter with direct cold air feed from a modified morettes, battery relocated to the boot to aid air flow.
Custom maf from the US
Full stainless air pipe from maf to throttle body
75mm mustang throttle body,
Uim honed to suit throttle body and polished
Lim polished
Msds headers
Custom stainless y pipe
Custom exhaust with removable decat. Needed this to pass the mot
Magnecor racing leads

And was running at a safe 243bhp.

Big figures are very difficult on obtain.

really? nicely done i was looking to get around 220 ish, would a massive air filter make any difference compared to a normal size cone filter? did you do things individualy? if so did removing all the cats make a noticeable difference?

Removing all of the cats makes a huge difference but only iif you can improve the air intake as well. Big cones only work if like myself you get plenty of cold air feeds to it.

Mine was the result of five years trial and error, we were running two cars in parallel with similar mods to determine which mods worked and which didn't.

We tested on rolling road at college on a 2002 golf with standard air filter, then with k & n and then no air filter. The results were shocking. With k&n on was down 8bhp on standard. With no air filter down 11bhp. You are much better fitting a k&n panel filter in your standard air box unless of course you get your car REMAPPED with a k&n cone filter. Also a heat sheild is a good idea. It is the sound of a k&n that decieves people.

Could that be anything to do with mass amounts of heat soak??

If its a st225 then you will lucky to beat it ina 200. We replaced mine for a BMW 535d and the missus's for a 60 plate st225, the Focus will beat the 200 all day long.

Heat soak is a huge factor plus the fact that a lot of people neglect their cne filters and let them become clogged up with dirt and grime that reduces airflow and hence power. A remap is a must with the sort of mods you make to make the most put of them.

Seriously mate, the 225 is a much better motor than the 200. Even in standard form it is miles better with a simple remap it will eat the 200.

Even standard the missus's 225 outperformed my 200 in every aspect. Unless you go for forced induction you are on a hiding to nothing, on the twisties you will just be left eating dust.

I would just save face and admit defeat. Believe me I love the 200's but know that they aren't going to beat modern turboed motors.

Very difficult to get really good power gains, basic tuning as already mentioned, remap, decats, stainless exhaust manifolds, good filter, stainless exhaust, unless you want to throw stupid money at it, and supercharge or turbo it, you will never see proper power.

On an ST200 a shielded cone filter (like a Pipercross Viper) gives greater gains than a panel filter or an open cone. We tested one on the rollers and, more importantly on the road using an air temp sensor. The 200s engine bay is very cramped and heat soak is an issue with a cone filter.

While power gains can be had the cost to gain just a few bhp makes it a little pointless, if it was mine I'd save my cash so I could afford to put petrol in!!

It has three cats (two precats) and a main cat. You can remove the precats and still pass an mot but it will fail if you remove all three.

very true, I've had everything over the space of my three V6's, few different open induction kits, panel filters, and finally a piper cross viper. You don't get the induction sounds of an open induction kit with a viper, but you get a lot better throttle response, and the car doesn't get slower the warmer the engine gets, like it does with an open induction kit

Not the most asteticly pleasing set up, but it's function over looks, I've got the viper sucking air from where the standard air box gets air from, and there is a very noticble throttle response over the standard air box, or an open induction kit

I was running the viper on mine until I put the k&n cone with the modified morettes, the three inch cold air feed direct from the front of the car certainly stopped the heat soak.

I read lots of Talk about fitting these, does anyone know any more details on what exact one to get and is it a straight swap?

Cheers for your help
