Default Got a feeling, timing chain has jumped.

Had this rattle from aux side for about a month or so now, have looked and checked the bottom pulley and all seemed ok, so put it down to normal TDCI noise.

Well Monday, started my trip home from work, changed to second and the rattle, tappy sound was not a nice sound, wasnt loud, but sounded like something hitting. stopped the car and was ticking over fine, had a very faint tinny rattle.
So drove home steady, but it had lost a bit of torque. The turbo still boosted as it did.

I have a feeling the chain tensioner has or is failing, and it lost tension when i changed gear and jumped a tooth.
My old focus did the same, the tension wheel was going, it felt gutless, had that in the garage for 3 days, to be told nothing wrong after changing plugs etc etc. in the end that let go and bang went 8 valves.

So if it was out by 1 tooth, would it still drive? still tick over smooth? or could it be something else?

I have had enough with it now TBH, it may be stripped or scrapped.

had this on mine, it was the bottom pulley, the part the belt sits on could spin independent of the rest of the pulley

But would it explain the loss of power?

yes as you lose power from the engine to drive all the associated pulleys. also like me youre probably driving a bit different listening to the noise. drop the belt off & check for movement in the pulley. I didnt think it would cause that sort of noise but mine sounded as though it was going to die.

Yer will drop the belt off, i did the full lock and AC on to see if the noise changed, but it didnt change at all. And when looking down at the belt going round there no wobble at all. Hence why i thought the aux side is all ok.

How easy is it to drop the belt off? any special tools required?

The bottom pulley was replaced at the same time as the Aux tensionner - so I doubt it has got so worn it's just spinning. But still worth checking.

Timing chains do slip, but it's rare, and I would expect it to be smokey, and lumpy on tickover. Have you had the fault codes read?

I know you had the belt and pulley done mate, so cant beleave it would fail that quickly. but will check with belt off.

Defo no smoke, and tick over is as good as the day i got it from you mate.

Not had fault codes read, didnt know it would pick anything up as theres no managment light up. guess its a trip to fords? not sure i know anyone who might be able to check it for me

The rattle i can live with, as i know they do make a racket, its the loss of torque thats worrying me..

It could be something else causing the power loss. Which a fault code reader may pick up on.

Try unplugging the little black hose to the turbo (the one that gets in the way when you remove the engine cover) and see if the car feels any different (it should feel flat as fuck with it removed) if it's no different then it's turbo vac problem. Also have a really good look for leaks from the boost and especially the other vac hoses.

I don't think it's a timing issue as you'd probably have problems with it cutting out, starting badly etc. Knowing that car it's probably something minor which is going to be a right arse to track down.

Maybe consider finding a diesel specialist before you take it into a Ford main stealer.

Have dropped it off to our machanic tonight dan, hes going to look at the aux and timing to see if anything is a miss. If the rattle is one of them, will see if its lost it power still after.

Its due its service again now as well, so fuel filter and oil change, was getting done april.

They pulled aux belt off today, and bottom pulley had play in it so going to put a new one on and see what its like. If its still noisey they are going to dig deeper.

Really? Surprised at it being the pulley. Has it fixed it?

Doesn't say much for the quality of the Eurocarparts pulley then!

Still glad it's all going well.

Just checked it out. Love the way it looks! For a Mondeo estate it certainly turns heads. Oh, and it's an Airtec intercooler

Oh Airtec one, woops. will go change it. cheers for that

Yer still gets heads turning as i drive about. Its great. As said, will be sad to see it go, but it seems every month something else goes wrong, ok it might be something silly, but it getting expensive now i think i have spent nearly 1500 on it in the year i have owned it. But when its driving with no problem, its one of the best cars i have drove.

Guess im not use to it, as all the cars i have had before, had years of motoring that cost nothing, apart from servicing and fuel.
