Can`t Change Gears Unless Engine Switched Off - Mondeo, mk3, 2ltr, 130, tdci
Hi All,
Very unusual problem just occurred today after having a new alternator belt (auxiliary belt) fitted to my 2ltr, 130, tdci, 56-plate Mondeo.
The mechanic at the garage was doing my job as the first one he`d done on this car. He jacked up the engine to do it and removed the engine mounting driver`s side...he jacked up the engine quite a bit on the driver`s side.
Eventually got the belt on and everything re-fitted.
Drove home the 8 miles with no gear changing problems and stopped in at shops 500yds from my house. As I was pulling in at kerbside at shops and trying to change gears, it was sticky and i had to be a bit forceful.
By the time I came out of shops and tried to drive away, the problem was getting really bad and it was getting very hard to select a gear.
Pulled in at my gate and couldn`t change gears unless i`d switched off engine, then absolutely no problem with clutch pedal down,..let pedal up and car took off in first as normal, but could change out of this gear.
Turned engine off again and down with clutch pedal and any gear was available.
Started up in first gear, but now the car was beginning to creep forward even with the clutch pedal fully down and clutch supposedly disengaged .
Any ideas as to the problem???
Could a fluid line have been snapped or partly broken with what he did in jacking the engine as the problem came on gradually??
Need my car for work so any help GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!
Stuart

Very odd one that.
Yes it could have snapped or pinched the clutch hydraulic pipe,I've never heard of this but it certainly sounds that way.
Where the clutch pipe goes into the box there should be a bleed nipple next to it.
Get someone to pump the pedal for you and try bleeding it out through that first, that should at least prove you've got fluid getting there.
Also,as a quick simple check in the fluid reservoir is fully up as well as the clutch is fed from the top of that so make sure that's fully topped before you bleed it as well.

Hi Botters - defo not a knackered clutch...it was perfect before the mechanic worked on car...but all your suggestions about brake fluid sound like it`s going to be this and the mechanic`s fractured a pipe somewhere...i did have a look in the fluid reservoirs and they were down,,,what one`s the brake reservoir as you look at the engine??
Thanks lads!!

(it will be on the right attached to the servo.)
Hi Luke, you mean it`s the same one i check maybe once a year...defo will be checking it once a month from now on...that`s after checking it at least once a day for a week after they fix the damage...

hi, I have just got a mondeo 1.8 zetec 2003, went to go out in it the other day and it wont go in any gear with the engine on but turn it off and you can get in any gear, but when you get going the gears are fine, the clutch pedal is a little soft, can anyone help??
step dad had this problem with his golf, turned out clutch had just gone, felt fine before hand but then all of a sudden gone, something to do with not being able to notice the clutch wearing out with the hydraulics or something and so it just goes, dont know if this is the same case for you with the mondeo though
