Default Focus st 2.5 timing issue please help.

Hi people quick question and a one that I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with bought my focus st around 2 weeks ago 51k on the clock drove it for around 2 days and then a loss of power and weird noise which sounds like its coming from the manifold. A crackling noise however this does not happen when the car is cold and the engine is smooth as silk but once it warms up the crackling noise is there once you get on the accelerator, I'm not mechanically minding but the guy I have working on it has told me the timing is out which is causing the problems but the 2.5 st focus 2006 has variable valve timing ?? And he needs to set it back up but doesn't no the correct degrees or correct way to reset the timing back up of there is a diagram or someone with some knowledge of this I would much appreciate your help thanks in advance Curtis.

Common problem, sounds like the 'oil filter housing diaphragm'.

How can your 'guy' working on it possibly say the timing is wrong if he dosen't know what it should be to start with ?

I've had the diaphragm checked I think mate is that where you take the oil cap of and the noise doesn't persist? This noise is a clacking noise at first I thort I may have snapped an internal because of the severity of the noise and loss of power. Good question aswell I'm unsure. He just said the timing was out and needed to no how they where correctly set up. Has anyone got this info? As then we can rule that out thanks for your reply

Someone will who has intimate knowledge of the ST, I am a Cossieholic and don't own an ST, so don't know first hand.

As a tip if you don't have much luck here put a thread in 'General Car Related Discussion', as that gets more views, failing that there are bound to be some diagrams/info on the net, i.e. STOC.

Yes thats the diaphragm test, it sounds by the way your describe the sound now though, you may have bent valve(s), in which case this would concur with what your guy is telling you.

I should imagine it's like other Ford engines, or Volvo in this case, there are no timing marks to align, if so you should be able to locate 'TDC' be inserting a screwdriver etc into plug number one until it reaches the highest point, anyway you need proper information to do this as it's not something you want to mess with without the correct knowledge or tools.

Yeah the guy I have working on the engine is a Subaru specialist the only guy I no who has messed around with hi performance engines. Ford them selfs sent me away with absolutely no info what so ever! I'm unsure where to go from here but he is almost certain there's nothing wrong with the internals of the engine as he has spinned it manually?? 30-40 times in guessing he means the crank, it starts from cold with absolutely no noise what so ever? He's the only guy within my area who has took the car on when we took the timing belt case of the belt had plenty play in it which did have us worried after checking and leaving it with him he's 100% certain that the timing is out but just can no get this info anywhere on the net about the set up off the variable timing. I'm sure he could explain what is going on better then I but he's not on a computer so where stalemate at the minute, thanks for your reply Martin I appreciate it

No problem, I think with VVT you still have static timing, then the motor or whatever it is does the advancement.

I would defiently put a post in that other room, that has far more views.

Someone on www.fordrst.co.uk may know, it's free to join and a lot of the main members are very knowledgeable when it comes to the engines etc.
