Default Gear "knob" refurbishment,

Bit of a random ask, but has anyone any tips or advice on sorting my gear "knob" out. As you can see from the photo the number 5 & 6 is void of any black.

I've tried candle wax, crayon, and a marker pen.... am I left with the option of an ultra fine paint brush and black paint.

Any tips or random ideas appreciated thanks y'all.
