Default Temperature problem

My temp gauge doesnt go to tha half way point more like a 3rd across. I ignored this and just thought must be ok. I

I also noticed my oil temperature doesnt go up. Prob and mm or 2 of movement from the bottom. I ignored this until yesterday when they both went to the halfway point on the way home.

The next day they were back down to the usual positions.

Any idea what could be causing this?

This is on a ST170
cheers

Sticking thermostat. Get a genuine one from Ford, only a few quid, and takes less than 5 minutes to change!

When the temperature stays cold, there's no reason to start the fans.
When you let the car idle at the end of a journey, does it get warm/hot then?
Do the fans kick in?

It does sound like a sticking thermostat.

One day on and temp goes to half way as does the oil. Not heard fans yet though but not took the time to check.

Got the same problem on mine.

Is it really only a 5min job?

Could you pls give me a quick run down of the procedure or point me in the right direction?

Much appreciated...

It depends on the model but it shoulden't be to tricky?

Basically drain cooling system, remove alternator, remove top hose from stat housing, remove housing, replace stat. Reverse this and replenish coolant.

As I say it depends on the model you have.

No need to drain coolant or remove alternator....

Follow top radiator hose to the thermostat housing where you will see 3 of 4 torx screws holding the thermostat cover on. Undo these, pop out the thermostat and put the new one in. Re-fit the cover, job jobbed. You'll loose about a litre of coolant so refill the level as required.

Thanks for the replies

I like the sound of Richie's method better!

But should have mentioned model - its an ST170
Same procedure?

It has 2 small hoses on the "alternator side" of the engine/rad and a larger one on the "airbox side" - presume I need to follow the larger one on the airbox side?

In my defense that is the Haynes procedure

Follow Richie, as he obviously has been there and done it.
