ST170 cambelt change
The cambelt is due on my ST170 but after been quoted around £400 to do it I have decided it may be better to do it ourselves, And have a few questions.
How simple is it to do in regards to the vvc? do you need a special locking tool ect?
Any other tips?
The vvc is really the only thing worrying me so any help is appreciated
Thanks in advance

Hi mate, im new here but am an experienced tech and coincidently only did my st timing belt kit last saturday.
You'll have no problems regarding the vvt, its a sealed pulley and you shouldnt need to disturb it in any way.
As said in the other post, locking tools are not strictly required, use some tippex or nail varnish(!) to mark the position of each pulley, (both cams and crank) before you take the belt off and ensure that none of them are turned until the new belt is fitted. (the cams may jump slightly, use a spanner on the pulley bolt to turn it back to where you need it.)
Also, just incase your not aware, you should really fit a cambelt kit, this includes the belt, tensioner pulley and guide pulley, these pulleys do not need to be marked with paint and are very simple to replace once the belt is removed.
you will need to support the engine from beneath as the offside engine mount needs to be removed.
the water pump pulley is driven by the alternator belt and obscures part of the timing belt cover, so needs to be removed. 3 bolts hold the pulley to the pump and these need to be undone while the alternator belt is still fitted, otherwise the pulley will just spin freely.
other than that its pretty straight forward
hope that helps chief

That's just great! Our local supplier apparently don't list a belt kit for the car. And it's ford only. And when I got it from fords i had to buy it in pieces and not as a kit. Otherwise yes I would of put a pattern one on. Oh well all done now
