Default Strange problem with my st170?

Hi all

Was in the car last night, it was driving fine with no problem. Got back in and drove it again about an hour later and it had no power at all. I could pull away in 1st and 2nd with my foot flat on the floor and it would just keep up with the traffic. It was making a loud induction noise like it was sucking in loads of air, like it was wanting to go but it was holding back.

Pulled up, switched the engine off and back on, and all was fine.

Any ideas as to what could have caused it?

Did you get an engine management light come up?

Could be a coilpack on the way out

No there was no management light. I have run a diagnostic check on it this morning and there are no fault codes present.

There is no misfire or anthing so I don't think it could be a coil pack. I have thought bout fuel pump on its way out which can be common on these, but the symptoms of that is that they loose power at high revs, which mine isn't.

I've been out in it this morning and it is still fine, so I am stumped to what is wrong with it!

Strange one!

Just a little off topic, when you replaced the runner control did you have an intermittent eml? ie 2-3 weeks off then on for a few days then off a few days and back on.

Reason i ask is mines done this since service last year and i had 3 lambdas and eventually the fault recorded faulty imrc. The light went out for about 6 months or more then comes on now and again. Car runs spot on though and doesn't throw up the usual low mpg and poor running symptoms(yet. *touches wood)!

try unplugging the MAF sensor and drive it again to see if it feels like it when you had the fault, might be a intermittant faulty maf.

Lol thats about right

MAtt, which lambda did you change? I did have this problem with the management light coming on and off, fault was the first lambda sensor which I replaced, not had a problem since.

I did think the air flow meter, I've read a guide on another site that tells you how to clean them, could be worth a shot?

I left my maf unplugged once after doing some work on my st170, drove down the road and the engine was flat no power, i pulled over popped the bonnet realised it was unplugged and therfore not working plugged it back in and engine was fine back to it normal power. So they do give the fault you describe.

I think it was the pre-cat they changed, it was done as part of the service. Everytime it was plugged in it said lambda sensor, then the last time it said IMRC. Its not been a major headache just the light will stay off for months then be on a few days but the runnings not affected.
