focus st170 common faults
is there something common on the inlet manifold set up that brings the engine man light on?
we have read the fault code but cleared it and it stayed off for a couple of days but has just come back on-cant remember what the code was now...but it was something to do with inlet -.............
it drives ok just has the light on which is annoying.

Yes, the inlet manifold runner control fails. Its a silver box mounted to the bulkhead, behind the inlet manifold. However if it is fucked then it will make a loud thumping noise for about 20 secs after startup. It has a cable coming out of it going to a plastic lever underneath the throttle body.
However if it was broken/disconnected then it would bring the light on every time.
Locate the arm under the throttle body, and watch it while someone revs it up to 6000 rpm, the arm should move.
Read the code again and let me know what it is!

Manifold runner issue
Hi i had the same problem with my ST170 2002 model and what i did was to remove the unit off the bulk head, Open the back casing and check all your cogs etc then i inspected the circuit board and found a dry joint so i de-soldered the 6 pins from the plug to the circuit board and the positive and negative from the motor whilst this was out I tested the motor on a 12 v supply and that was fine I then inspected the cable to check it was free and then checked the circuit board for anymore dry joints with a magnifying glass all was ok i then re-soldered the motor back to the circuit board and then the board to the 6 pins on the plug replaced the rear plate with gasket sealer after cleaning throughly and reinstalled the unit and the engine management light went out and all has been well since no problems hope this helps sort your problem and save you some money but it will take around an hour or so to complete

Similar problem I took the front off the unit and the return spring on the cam had jumped out of its retaining hole, I could see this was worn so drilled a small hole in plastic were sping sits, reconnected the spring and put a small blob of araldite to hold it in place, had the managment light switched off, been ok for the last 4 months.
