Default Battery Light

When I started the car up this morning and was driving to work I noticed that the battery light was on on the dash and didnt go off all the way to work. Does this mean the battery is flat and needs replaced?

It means the alternator is not outputting a charge.

Not that I know of.

Could be faulty alternator or simply the alternator belt has slipped off / snapped?
