Focus Rs, investment or not?
Any advice appreciated on this but I'm currently looking for a mk1 Frs and have been following the usual pistonheads, fleabay autotrader etc watching values and trying to get to know them better but valuations seem to vary soooo much. Is it as simple as 6 k gets a bit of a dog which will defo need work and 10k gets the best of whats out there?? They just don't seem to be selling or am I wrong.? I'm in no rush to buy so may just bide my time. CheeRS

i was going to but decided against it, a lot of the owners think they are the greatest things on earth and like to just have them for sale for 6 months rather than take a bid.
also a lot of people like to bend the truth when it comes to condition, i just couldn't find the right one so gave up in the end.

Thanks for that, this is why I struggle to see where the money is in them? But do believe they are only worth what people are willing to pay and if they ain't shifting!! Bad time of year too I suppose. Cheers

Not an investment at all, it's only a Focus RS.
When you take into account that you could put Ł10k in a decent savings plan and leave it there for 10 years it will yield a much higher return and command far less maintenance, all you would have is some minor admin as opposed to storage and maintenance considerations and associated costs like insurance or overheads, so whatever you think you'd made on the car, it will be largely eroded by what it has actually cost you to keep, even if you never drove it.
Also, if we all take our Ford blinkers off for a second and someone said buy an Astra VXR as an investment, you'd probably laugh, just because its not a Ford, but what is the difference?
Yes there are some success stories out there, but they don't apply to the modern RS range and never will to the same extent as days gone by IMO

Look at cars like the rs200, rs500, mk2 rs1800, mk1 mexico. They do have heritage and are worth a lot.
IMO the s1 hasn't hit those levels, the EsCos will be the next one.

2/3Years ago a Mk1 FRS was 5-6k, now they are 7-8k so take Ł1000 a year price increase as an example, no savings account will give u that on Ł10,000!
I think buying one, keeping it mint, using it in the nice weather and then selling it 3-4years later would see you a handsome profit... I maybe wrong!

You've just argued my point and then agreed with me? You're not just buying a car, you're taxing it, storing it, insuring it, mot'ing it, maintaining it, fueling it...if it was an investment, clever people would all be doing it, and they're not.

Just like to add....
It may not be the best car out there but it's a car you can buy and use for a couple of years and get your money back, maybe a bit more.
I bought a M3 CSL in 2012 for Ł22k and sold it in 2014 for Ł24k and since then the prices have risen even more and you can't get a similar car for less than Ł30k (yes I'm gutted lol)

I doubt anyone can say with any certainty, only time will tell, look at the prices for mk1 Escorts, I bet nobody expected them to be an investment years ago. I hope they do go up as I might make some money back on mine lol.

I think a lot will depend on the future cars ford produce, for example if they are all 5 door then older 2 door rs models will be more desirable IMO.

As said struggle to be investment once you've taxed insured and paid to run it. Fairly safe you won't lose much in depreciation though...

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I paid Ł15k in 1990 for my 3dr, couldn't quite stretch to the extra Ł5k that an RS500 would have cost me. If I only knew then what I know now...

The Mk1 Focus RS is already a pretty rare car with only circa 2100 UK RHD models from the factory. To put that into perspective iirc there were over 8500 S1 Escort RS Turbo's built, so there are less than quarter to begin with and you can see the values of a clean S1 these days. After you take account of all the ones written off and there are afiar few Cat C, D's how many are actually left. Maybe 1500 or less?
It will be a modern classis in 2/3 years time and you will be able to get them insured under a classic car policy for something crazy like Ł100.
Cant see them ever being as special as say a 3 door Cossie, but at least it wont spend half its life getting repaired as its a fairly modern and reliable car. A shortage of RS specific parts is where you might struggle, but maybe the RSOC will pull their finger out and actually do something in this regard.

I reckon they'll go up in value, but not for a while, very much a long term thing I reckon.

Wahay!! I've lost my Virginity!!
Working in the trade I've noticed the values have gone up (on CAP) steadily for the last 18 months. It may not be a high yield but the values are certainly going upwards. .
I was weighing up a mk 1 frs or an s2 rs turbo, I went for the latter in the end

I bought my first mk1 frs 3yr ago with no service history, average condition, bit of rust on the rear arches and 90k on the clock. I sold it in March for Ł800 more than I paid for it and it was showing 120k. The seats were in poor condition with badly torn alcantara, other than that it was a tidy car. In the 3yrs I had it I spent around 1k on it and that involved having the arches painted and modding it from standard to 300bhp. There is definately money to be made with them if you buy the right car.
When I bought mine I still had my saff cossie and after couple of years I had no use for the saff as the focus was so good at doing everything! I sold the saff but 6 months later then sold the focus too and bought an escort cossie. That only lasted 8-9weeks before I traded it for another mk1 focus rs. I'd never own another cossie again now! In my opinion the mk1 frs is one of the most underrated rs's. My new one is around 340bhp and would destroy my old 400bhp saff and escos round any track or on the open road.

read this thread again now gents.
When written you could get the 'best of the best' for Ł10k but now theyre selling up and over Ł25k for low milers.
Another chap in this thread sold his bmw csl for Ł24k, now theyre Ł70k for a low mileage csl.
A focus has motorsport heritage - colin mcrae rallying one, rs badge, limited numbers.
To answer re costs:
Tax Ł0 on sorn
Insurance Ł80pa on an off road policy
Fuel Ł0
Storage Ł0 if in garage or on drive
Costs can be kept low if cars not used.
To answer the poster who says the clever people arent investing in cars, well, id dispute this and say many people are.
The facts speak for themselves but its not to say it will continue.....

If you get in to any investment after the noise then you are too late, unless you can "find a bigger fool" as they say. The time to buy is before they are worth anything and get out before the peak.
Everyone buys at the top and that is not where the money is made.
My mate saw last of the Ferrari manual boxes and non turbo cars being blue chip end of era and bought a few at Ł60k, now 3 to 5 times that but he isn't buying more, the money has been made, but now the "investors" move in and make very little.

MK2 focus rs500's are making good money too every 10k mile car is in the region of 50-60k not bad imo for an 8 year old car, if you were lucky enough to buy one from ford at 35k and had it sat in your garage with little or no mileage you've almost doubled your money in 8 years not bad
The MK2 FRS was not mass produced either so imo that makes them special and desireable and the fact they are great cars
Any rs is a special car

Hey @tankybaby66, it's clear that you had quite an adventure with your 2006 Ford Focus ST-2! It's never easy to part ways with a car that's been so much fun, but I understand that life changes sometimes require us to make tough decisions.
For anyone looking to buy or sell a car, checking out resources like cash giraffe reviews can be really helpful. They often provide insights into various financial aspects of car transactions, ensuring that both the seller and buyer get a fair deal.
I hope you found the right buyer for your Ford Focus ST-2 eight years ago, and that it went to someone who enjoyed it as much as you did.
