Mk1 Focus Steering/Handling Problem
Its a hard one to explain but the car just feels really loose and shakey through the steering wheel, all the suspension has been replaced and new arb links but still no change. It feels slightly better when going faster, but when going over a rough road it feels like its falling apart.
I was thinking maybe its the steering rack, and tie rod/track rod ends

From: Wiltshire, Bath, chippenham area!
have you:
had All the wheels checked/balanced?
have you recently swapped front wheels onto the rear and rear onto front??
apparently the rear tyres wear funny on FRS due to the camber, and feel very odd if you swap them round..

I can't see a service interval in my 1.8 manual, which specifies renewal of steering fluid. I'm not sure if it does, but if you're struggling for ideas, it may be worth asking.
Also an area to check might be power steering pump, if it's relative to engine revs.
Have you had the geometry set lately?

Had this problem with mine.
Changed both outer track rods and the inner track rod on the O/S because it had play.
Had it tracked.
It's 90% Better, but still a little bit of vibrations through the steering. Can't find anything up with it
Might look into getting a new steering rack

Track rod ends or Bottom ball joint could be suspect, you can buy them seperately but you may have to drill out the rivets to get the old ones off, easiers thing is to buy 2 new wishbones that come with ball joints and new front and rear wish bone bushes, rules that out completely then
Thereefo no movement in my ball joints, the wishbone bushes seem to be ok on mine too.Really cannot get to the bottom of this one?Think I'm going to try change my front tyres next.
