Default Removing a/c, any help?

The a/c on my 1.8 isn't working, probably due to it needing a re-gas, but I'm not really a fan anyway, so I'm looking into removing the system to get rid of the weight of the unit and any drive losses.
Tried to find previous posts on this, but found nothing.
Any body done this who can tell me what's involved?
Not sure if a silver top non-a/c ancilliary belt will fit.

You'll need to get any gas removed from the system by a pro, after thats done should just be a case of unbolting it all and fitting a belt from a non p/s zetec. Do you really need to remove it anyway? There is no drive losses when your not using it anyway...

I'm not sure what is still driven when it's not switched on, but there will still be a loss, and if it's anything like the unit I re-fitted to an old bristol on work experience, it'll weigh a tonne, mounted quite far in front of the front wheels.
I didn't think it would be as cheap as Ł40 for a re-gas, but it's still money I could spend on somethin I want.

It needs a new belt anyway, and I never use a/c anyway. Can't see how I'll be spending any more money than I would anyway.
Cheers for the fb by the way.

Ive done this on a mondeo before. Mine was empty of gas but i have also done it before by disconnecting pipes and running like foook although not recommended. Once you have removed the pump ussaly 4 bolts all you need is a non air con belt once thats on remove as much pipes as you like and the a/c rad if you want. I got my belt from local motor factors for Ł6ish.

Great, cheers John.
Did you notice any difference, how heavy was the unit, and what belt did you use? Was thinking one from a silver top, as all the zetec focus' have a/c.

Unit was 15kgs max tbh it isnt really worth the effort. Dont know about belt because off pulley sizes my be different on focus's compared to mondeos.
