Ive done this on a mondeo before. Mine was empty of gas but i have also done it before by disconnecting pipes and running like foook although not recommended. Once you have removed the pump ussaly 4 bolts all you need is a non air con belt once thats on remove as much pipes as you like and the a/c rad if you want. I got my belt from local motor factors for £6ish.
