Default problem with blown/leaking intercooler mk1 rs

ok first i noticed my intake temps high, checked water levels and the intercooler was empty, so i refilled it then the problems started, under hard acceleration the car begins to stutter at about 3-4k rpm, misses and all sorts, then at junction the cars goes to almost stall. anyway the water seems to be going again from the intercooler, run without water the car seems fine, soon as water is topped up it runs bad. i think there is a leak between the air to water side in the intercooler. has anyone else come across this as i can't seem to makesure it is the cooler thats the problem before buying a new one, any ideas on cost? thanks

You can get them pressue tested, apart from that I don't think there's any other way. Does it steam much from the exhaust?
