Default Difference of filters

Looking at getting an induction kit this month. I was chatting to a mate last night, he was saying to not get an induction kit, but get a panel filter. Si a mate of ours has stupid evo’s and swears blindly about only having a panel filter. Would it be better for me to get a panel filter on 1.6 than an induction kit? I will probably just be getting a bluefin as well then changing the car.
I have read in magazines though that the induction kit is better.

What’s the view on this, and what is better on foci

Cheers

ST170 inlet and snorkel with a decent panel filter.

Stay away from open air filters as they take in warm air from the engine and does not make any changes.

If you dont go down the ST170 route then get something like the Viper pipe or like i have the BMC dinamic air box

Hey, you can fettle your original air box to get pretty decent induction. Either buy an st170 snorkel or put a bigger pipe on the oe one. Remove the piece of plastic in front of the scoop that stops leafs and stuff. Then get a panel filter to increase flow. Then remove the airbox resonator to get the noise. I have a 1.6 and it runs great like this. Persoanlly i think a k&n arent worth the money as increse in performance isnt really noticeable.

for the best performance a cold air induction would be best, they can be bought or made up, replaces the airbox but instead of a normal filter being right next to the engine in the engine bay, there is pipework taking the filter head right down behind the grill or bumper.
the downside is the possibility of sucking in water if you bomb it through a puddle!!!
some garages make them up for maybe 200-300 quid, there is a bloke on e-bay selling them for 40-45 quid including filter, but a k&n 57i can be put on!
cheers

I've had two induction kits in the past, one on my 1.6 and another on my st170. Both have lost me power and I have gone back to a panel. Only filter I would get would be a enclosed one with a cold air feed like a viper, bmc or simota. However you'll be lucky to see any gains. Stick to the panel mate.

If your looking for impressive power gains mate and have got the cash get a exhaust manifold and a set of cams with management, you could see about 150 bhp if setup correctly.

Better off spending the money on other upgrades that will actually "increase" power. I have had a few different induction kits on my car and they all made the car lose power and gain flatspots.

Like mercer said, get cams.
