Default ST170 Heatshield

My sis keeps compaining of her heat shield rattling on her ST170.

I think she means the exhaust heat shield! Havent had time to look myself, just wondering if its a common problem?

If it's the CAT heat shield, then see http://www.fordst170.co.uk/known.php - under "Rattle noise form under body while at 2,000rpm"

my manifold heatshield used to rattle as the bolts holding it on had reacted to the heatshield metal and corroded through.
i tried to remove the bolts to replace them with new ones with washers but the heads rounded off
i've since used some stainless cable ties to fix it at the lower point where 2 other bolts had corroded through next to the downpipes - did the job

yep i used 2 so have 2 spare

on the lower part if you have the holes (bolts corroded through) slide 1 end through each hole and around the downpipes - the ties work like the plastic ones - pull harder to tighten

i took my car to an exhaust fitters to get them to remove the heatshield bolts and was told they'd have to take off the manifold, drill out the bolts and rethread - would have been upto 4 hours labour at £40 p/h - cable ties were a bit cheaper at £2.49 and 5 mins for me to fit

I'd take it off... why hide a such a funky looking exhaust? if heat is a problem then get it wrapped in exhaust wrap

No road ramp or jacking equipments.

My parents house has a tiny hill which "just" give me access to the cat area to use the steel tie wrap to secure it.

With my house purchasing and buying stuff for the house, road ramp & jacking equipments are low priority.

Perhaps in the future...

you don't want to leave it off unless you do wrap the manifold - there's too much heat which will melt the power steering pipes, etc

Oh the ST170 rattling @ 2000rpm from the cat heatshield. How i miss those nice days where you can drive along with the window open and listen to the rattling as you drive .....

NOT!

Used to annoy the hell out of me when i had my ST170. How ford could expect anyone to drive along in a nearly new car and it rattle worse than a 17yr old Escort is beyond me and one of the reasons i wanted a Focus RS

Tony i did the same fix to my ST170 and it would cure it for a while but the metal cable ties would work loose after a few months and i would have to do it again. Became a real pain in the arse doing that every 3 months

Yeah defo better than paying.

Mine still had both bolts in the heatshield but rattled. IF i still had the car, i would have De-catted it now and ditched the cat and heatshield
