Hi discovered water dripping onto the gearbox from water pump/thermostat housing, not sure which.
Has anyone had this issue or can help with advice as the water from the expansion tank drains quite quickly.

Water pump or thermostat housing?

 

It's the thermostat housing.

Very common for them to split.

Easy repair as long as you don't let it get to low and cook the head gasket.

 

my advice: replace the thermostat and housing, then fill up with water/antifreeze

I would say it's the bung that sits in the bottom of the housing, this is a common fault in these. New bung and seal used to be available from ford to save you buying the whole unit.

 

Wasn't expensive for the housing and thermostat. Ł24.

 

Fitted new thermostat housing today. Bit of a shocker as it was slightly different from standard and didn't include the cover for the thermostat! Think the auto-shop would have asked me if I needed one.
The old t-cover had 3 very rusted torx head screws which had to be ground down to remove the cover. Then a quick visit to b&q to buy something that would substitute the 3 screws now headless. Got some upgraded 'coach bolts' with similar thread pattern but greater diameter and a pack of washers too.
I then realised the sensor hole on the top of the main housing was blanked off. Out with another power tool to drill through the thin plastic. It worked but required further fetling to put the sensor into the hole.
Finally finished with new jubilee clips as I can't stand the standard ones you find on houses.
A simple job taking ages. Lesson here buy genuine...

your old one looked very tired and rusted so no surprise it needed replacing, looks spot on now
