Default focus mk1 1.6 loss of power and engine light

I have a y reg 1.6 auto focus and am experiencing loss of power, high revs as car changes gear and engine management light which goes off when I restart the car. I have had pipes into the engine changed as we thought this was the problem but after driving for a few minutes the same problem happens. Took the car to the garage and they said the seals in the driveshaft are leaking but if we keep the gear box oil topped up it will be ok until it is fixed, but they gave us no reason to our problem. Any help would be really grateful

I would start by checking / changing the easiest items first. When was she last serviced? The items I would be looking at would be spark plugs, leads from spark plugs that go to coilpack, the coilpack, vaccum tubling, fuses & relays (if blown), condition of battery / alternator. Engine oil, coolant.

In my opinion the high revs when changing gear sounds like your clutch is slipping (Oh, it's an autobox, hmm not sure about that one sorry). EML coming on could be spark plugs or coilpack.

I'm no mechanic but have experienced the problems you described in your post.

Even make this list and get a reputable well known mechanic to check.

Need to get the fault code read by someone with diagnostic software, most garages will be able to do this for you. you are just stabbing in the dark changing parts hoping it will fix it.

There's a set of 3 little hoses that go from the block breather to the inlet manifold, these are prone to splitting, and can cause the revving when changing gear, along with a whole host of problems. They're located under the inlet manifold (well, more like 'in' it where it curves round!)

Code readers will scan for dtc codes in memory, they won't magically fix the problem though .

So you think it's better to replace part after part after part until it works rather than get the fault code, pinpoint the fault and rectify it?

He should bring his / her car to a mechanic and let them decide what to do. They are qualified to do so after all.
