Default Handbrake cable

Car failed it's MOT yesterday as the n/s rear cable has stuck and has very little to no effort when applied. Are the drum ones the same as disc, or Mondeo ones same as mk1 Focus etc? I have a 1.8 zetec with rear discs from new. Where is best place for one?

right to start that abit confusing (well to me anyway)

first off you need to check weather its the cable or caipler or drum since i dont know which you have if you have rear caiplers its easy to check where the problem is just jack up the rear of the car on the side thats failing and get under from the rear of the car and look at the back of the caipler and you will see where the cable goes to the caipler its on a little metal arm, what you need to do is get a hammer or some thing big and hard and spin the bad wheel then use the hard object to push that arm on the caipler towards the front of the car if it stops the wheel then its the cable thats at folt if it doest stop the wheel then its the caipler at folt.

if you think you can change these items on your own but dont know 100% on you car i can tell you if you want there not to hard to change.

as for your other questions
no discs and drums anit the say and thay use diffrent hand brake cables.

no all cars use diffrent lengh hand brake cables so you need to get the correct one for your car.

if you have replaced the discs did you reset the ajuster on the caiplers when refitting? as if you didnt do it it would cause liitle to no grip on one caipler..
it takes 2 mins to do and you can do it without jacking up the car using the way i said above just push the arm forward on the caiplers a few times with the hand brake up and thay will stop about half way and will become hard.

any local halfauds sell them but best go to your local motor factors as thay will sell the same thing but alot cheaper.

I have rear discs mate. Its the cable itself as a pal came over and it was stuck solid part way in. He got the cable off the brake by removing the caliper itself and used penetrating spray on the hinge part of the handbrake and that works and moves freely now. As it had been binding on he left the handbrake on that side disconnected but my brake pedal is now right down no idea why. I can get a cable from Halfrauds? I have a traders card so may work out cheapest option.

Cheers

yeah i know whats happened it happened to my focus back a few months ago i fixed it by forcing the cable back out with a set of pillars and then pushing it in and out a few times with some wd40. what happens is the one cable rusts up and locks it to place over time which means you'll need a new cable as after a while it will just rust up again.

what theres no puresher in the foot brake at all? did you mate bleed the brakes? did he wind or push the rear caiplers in?

yeah thay should sell them. well ive found there 30% above most places and there traders card only gives you 10% so your still paying more.

When he had that side caliper off he pushed the piston back in with the windy tool. I have a few inches of braking pressure at the bottom of the pedal stroke. I've asked carpartsexpress for a price by email yesterday as I was too busy to call him but heard nothing yet.

Handbrake is sorted now but brakes still feel spongy. Do they need bled or do I need to adjust the handbrake to tighten up the brakes again?
