Default Series 1 advise wanted

Hi everyone,

I am really interested in finding a mint S1 turbo to use for shows etc and have posted a message in the wanted section (so hopefully the car will find me lol)

What do I really need to look out for on the car? (i know the usual stuff as its nearly a 20 year old car etc), but are there any bits of info people could give me?

I really cant wait to get one of these as I have always wanted one in mint condition to be proud of and use.

If you are looking for a Show Car you will probably have to part with 7k+ and it should be in perfect order throughout. Otherwise off the top of me head you need to look at Battery tray, Around fusebox, Inner wings, Wing panel laps in engine bay, Floor pan, Chassis rails especially the rears.
Hope this is of use, I am sure someone will post some other stuff as well.
Good luck searching

If your looking for a show car then in my opinion you need a restored concourse car look to pay 6k + for a good example.

I must admit I know I would have to spend the money to get a real good one but I think I was looking to spend about 5K ish do you think it`s possible to get a good one for this price?

I have seen what appear to be very good cars for 4K so was expecting to pay a little more to go the extra mile and get a really really good one.

Mind you I do want a really good one so I may end up spending more

for 5k you should find a good one, maybe requiring minor work to make mint,
try RSOC mag for good ones

As above. Also look inside sunroof for rust. Check for a cracked dash. A 5k+ car should have neither. Check for rust behind the bumpers and behind the kit. Check the gaps. ie, either side of the bonnet, tailgate and doors. They should be even and not excessively large. Doors should shut nice and smoothly on a 5k+ car. If the car is being sold as original, the front grille should have black around the outside edges and not entirely white. The RS badge on the tailgate should be right up under the spoiler. If not, the boot has probably been resprayed. Check the wheel arches so see if they have been cut. I was like you, wanted one for ages and had cash waitin. It is so tempting to buy the first one you see. Take someone with you who knows about them (if you don't) and crawl all over it. Someone put a S1 buying guide thread on here but can't remember who it was. I paid over 5k for mine and although not concourse she is a very nice honest example. If you are paying around the 7k mark, the car should be almost perfect and you should'nt be spending anything on it when you get it home. Good luck fella and be patient and BEWARE !

Found the S1 buying guide on the RSOC site in the Cars For Sale section (rswoza's thread).
