Default Gear linkage woes

Ok I have a series 1 gearbox and a sloppy mk4 linkage. I picked up a very good mk4 linkage to replace my sloppy one but now I have changed it I can't select any forward gears (1st, 3rd, 5th), they just spring back to neutral???????

I'm thinking of selling .... 2k takes the car

It's just not set up right, just needs fiddling around with to work

I normally stick the box in 4th by hand and connect the linkage up to line up with that

It helps to have someone hold the linkage in the 4th position while you connect it up

Give yourself a breather and try again bud you will get it

P.s others might have better ways of doing it but it works for me

I do it the same as rsmark but manually put the box in reverse instead of 4th.

I set it up as Haynes said .... Put gearbox in reverse and got someone to hold the gear lever in reverse while I tightened the nut?

Yes thats correct but did you make any note of roughly how far down the bar the linkage arm went ?

I must admit i set mine up in 4th, then i nip it up so it can still move a little and try the gearstick, if it feels a bit off i can just apply a bit more pressure to get it where i want then tighten the clamp properly.

Got a Ka linkage in mine, MUCH tighter feeling and closer together too. Downside is no neutral springs so it doesn't centre when you let go in neutral, though theres no real need for that.

Doing the Ka linkage in 4th helps me a lot, cause if you set it a bit far forward it can knock out of gear sometimes when you lift off in 3rd.

He's running a series 1 gearbox.

I'm also running an ib5 in my cab. The centering didn't become apparent til I did the linkage on my 3i.

Ok tried adjusting it again and when i try to select any forward gears from under the car, the sharft springs back to neutral, it's like it's not locking.

2nd, 4th and reverse are all perfect and the gearbox made no noises befor3 I changed linkage.

Could it be new gearbox time?
Are there springs that lock gears accessible with the gearbox still in place?
