Default gearbox has shat itself

having run about 200hp for the past year my gearbox has had enough. its developed a whine in 4th/5th and ive already got another box lined up dirt cheap. I was gonna rebuild this box then swap em over but am I pissing in the wind? what other options are there for a gearbox to cope with 200hp ish. I know its hit n miss but im led to believe an ib5 is marginally better. or will a fresh bc box be ok at my power. and would any one on here be willing to fit it? cheers matt

Get hold of karlos g

He will build a box with a mk6 casing with later ka internals and a LSD from your broken box, he has the same combination on his 300bhp zetec turbo

Otherwise it's a cts stage 2 at £1295

As Mark says that's the best option unless you want to spend big money on a CTS box which is the same but with a Quaife LSD.

£100 max for a mk6 escort box
Your diff
About £100 for the ka box
Plus putting together, and you will need to pm karlos about that but it's defo worth it, I'm going the same route once I get my engine running

PM'd mate, you'll also need a set of diff bearings which are about £40 from Burtons.

Oh I will have to look again lol

I'm just selling my t34.48 so I can fit a stage 3 t3 and steel rods because I want response over power and with the steel rods I can run high boost like 25psi and I don't have to piss about fabricating anything

I'm defo going same as you for the gearbox

I got a KA gearbox for £35
A fully rebuilt Mk5/6 escort box for £55 so only needed to buy a gasket set.
Then got the mechanic at my local tuner to put it all together for me for £40
and sourced a puma gear linkage for £20
Whole thing came to about £170

I know! I had £100 on me and he refused to take anymore.

Seeing as the gearbox place in town wanted near £300

got one of those rally design ones coming for it...u reckon its worth keeping that for ma s2 and using puma linkage on fez ?

It's 100 times better than the standard shifter, but I am using it on an ib5.
On a bc box it won't self centre If you knock it out of gear.

ka ratios are almost identical to RST ones, most people don't like diesel ratios as they are so long.

If you want identical ratios to an RST BC box you need a KA 1.3 gearset with puma 1.7 final drive. However, the LSD will need modifying as it has a slightly larger diameter then the Puma's final drive.

Would the IB5 be strong enough for a 1.8 Zetec on ITBs etc puttting out around 190bhp on track?

Just thinking, being NA there wouldn't be as much torque as a turbo

Can't really say mate, they are still a weak box at the end of the day, just not as weak as the old BC...
My old IB5 in the Cabby has been running 250-300bhp for the last two years and hasn't broken, that's using launch control and flat shift with real hard driving... But, that doesn't mean they will all take that sort of abuse.

should be alright in the n/a form because although it has good power the torque is nothing compaired.

aslong as it has a very good clutch and linkage set up should be fine, but another thing to concider is the bc/ib5 box doesnt like to change gear anything above 7500prm
