Default Turbo whining

Can anyone help. My s2 escort rst, recently had head gasket changed, now I'm getting a whining sound on turbo when foot is down on accelerator, it's really struggling to move, does anyone have any suggestions.

Does it sound like it's coming from the turbo itself? Is it RPM dependant?
If it's struggling to move (the car I'm assuming) do you mean it feels slow or it actually struggles to pull away and drive at all?

Default Whining noise ip from turbo

It pulls away fine but Is slow, I've checked all boost pies and they seem fine to me. The car has been standing for 8 months and just got it back in the road. I'll be honest I am new to this stuff as this is my first rst. When you put your foot down I can hear whining from the front of the car assuming its the turbo and can feel it pulling back if you know what I mean.

I would make sure it has fresh fuel, new oil and filter and other service items then take it for a set up.

Take the boost pipe off and check the turbo spins freely and that there isn't too much play.

Moving left to right slightly is normal but it does need to spin so just double check it mate.
Also pressure test the intake system, that will show any leaks just in case you've missed something when you looked over your boost pipes, although generally with MFI if a boost hose is leaking it will not idle.

Checked the turbo today and it spins freely, I have noticed I slight oil leak which I believe is coming from the turbo, would it have anything to do with the timing, might have to take it to a specialist, but the timing in the engine is fine

Ok that's good, it could be the ECU, ACT or knock sensor retarding the timing on boost but this wouldn't make a whining noise just a loss of power.

Now your talking a foreign language, it's pulls away fine in first gear but when in second through to 5th you have to drive it like a normal car as something is holding back the power. I appreciate your help though thank you. Like I said this is my first rst.

Mfi will have the KE-jetronic fuel distributor to the right of the engine, with pipes going to turbo and fuel lines to injectors.

Efi system will have efi written on the inlet manifold, i'm guessing that your RS will be MFi

Lost me now, I know there are pipes going to the injectors from bit where the air filter is if that makes sense you prob sound thick but I'm learning with this as this is my first rst, I'll check the inlet manifold tomorrow to see if anything is written on it.

There is no rattling, it definitely feels as if the turbo is struggling, I think it needs to be set up as the car has been standing for 8months and I have only just got it back on the road since Saturday, the car was fine before I took of the road, I changed the head gasket as didn't know the history of the car and ever since I'm getting this problem now.

Silver ECU at the back of the engine bay below the wiper mechanism controls ignition timing on boost, if faulty you could be retarded (timing, not you personally! lol)
ACT - Air charge temperature, monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine, if this sensor is faulty it can cause retarded ignition timing on boost.
Knock sensor, monitors the engine for signs of detonation (fuel/air igniting when it shouldn't) and will also cause retarded ignition timing on boost.

Retarded timing will mean very little power, but as I said above it will not make the turbo whine so probably not that anyway?! lol

Default Turbos whining

Thank you for the info, I say whining, took it out again today it defiantly sounds if turbo is struggling for power which what you say could be the ecu, I don't understand as when I took it off the road it was fine, done the head gasket and now not running properly, I've now booked her in at a specialist on Saturday, if it is a faulty ECU can they be repaired or would it be a new one do you reckon.

TBH mate if there is a whine then that sounds to me like the turbo is fucked, they whine when the bearings are gone.
If it's ECU or ACT/Knock sensor you would just need a new one (second hand in the case of the ECU).

I hope it's not the turbo, wouldn't it whine though when the car is idling, I'm sure when I bought it the bloke had just had it all put it but who knows. I'll find out saturday. Lets hope it's one of the cheaper options, but i have found a few places that can recondition turbos.

No not at idle mate as it's not doing anything, only when it makes boost (second gear onwards really).

If it has one (year dependant) it's on the right hand end of the inlet manifold, green sensor I think.
Yeah ACT sensor is in charge carrier.

Ok cool, it's a g reg 89 I believe, where I've done the head gasket my self if I've connect leads to the wrong place (not HT leads) could this have an effect? I'm 90% sure I have put everything back where it came from.

'89 Will have a knock sensor.
I doubt it mate, wouldn't start or idle correctly if things were plugged in all wrong.

So it's on the right hand side of the inlet manifold, that's not the exhaust manifold. What oil is recommended as well as I was told 10w40.

Surely if the turbo was cooked it would smoke it's tits off

Sounds like the timing is massively restarded, or someone's turned the boost up without having the correct chip

I would personally take it too a specialist before you blow it up and have it checked over
