how can I tell a series 2 gearbox from series 1
Hi all. Looking to fit an lsd to my mk5 fiesta. Apparntly I need a series 2 as the lsd has an 8 bolt crown wheel. How do I know an s1 from s2 without opening it? Thanks

I think they both have different mountings . I think a S2 sits on a cradle under the box and a S1 holds the box from the chassis . The s1 has 4 bolts in a square pattern facing to the front of the car and the s2 has 2 gearbox mounts facing the floor underneath the box .

Thanks very much lads. Very helpful. Am I right in saying I need a series 2 diff for an ib5 with small machining to the crown wheel? And all series 2 boxes have an 8 bolt crown wheel?

There's alot of peolpe selling box's as rst box's either because they think people wont know the difference(most dont) or because they hve removed it from there rst and genuinly dont realise its not the original rst box but a replacement as the box's all look the same and codes on the box's are all the same

I think the series one had 6 bolts holding it to the crown wheel where as the series 2 had 8 bolts.
From what I've read it's the 8 bolt diff you want for fitting in to an ib5 well I hope it is as that's what I've got & want to fit it to lol

Thats incorrect, The Escort RS Turbo was the first front wheel drive road car in the world to use 'this' compact viscous-coupling design limited-slip differential instead of a normal mechanical limited slip differential.
Edit to add, agree with both posts above. Also to add the Fiesta RS Turbo did not have LSD.

Yes you will need an 8 bolt LSD which is from a S2 box.
I've never found a 6 bolt one in a S2 box but if Roger has then there's a chance you might have to strip a couple to find one, could be that a S1 gear set had been fitted to a S2 casing maybe? Anything could have happened over the last 25 years! lol
