umm does sound like an earthing prob, would check and clean earthing points first and go from there, could possibly be the wrong alternator and it isnt sticking enough charge out to keep battery topped up, check see what the ampage should be then look on the alternator to see what its rating is,

sounds like a wanky alternator take it back, it has been known for new parts to be faulty especially recon units. possibly might be able to replace the brushes in the unit sounds like they aint making contact until you give it a blap of throttle or the regulator is duff in it, either way i think you have discovered your problem.

You have a bad field circuit, does your battery light work?

Also you need a voltmeter to measure the power AT the battery, that volt gauge could well be dodgy OR people fit them in a totally inappropiate place, i.e. onto another circuit.

Like I say thats most likely the field circuit, does your battery light illuminate when the ignition is switched on?

I would still check the blue wire on the unit itself personally.
