You have a bad field circuit, does your battery light work?
Also you need a voltmeter to measure the power AT the battery, that volt gauge could well be dodgy OR people fit them in a totally inappropiate place, i.e. onto another circuit.

i have voltmeter. yes i must admit it is earthed off the cd player but i know it doesnt charge sometimes till i rev it because my power steering dont kick in till its fully charging
