Currently got a resto going on my s2 rst, the sunroof tray is fu*ked and the roof itself doesn't look amazing, various dimples etc so now thinking along the lines of carbon roof...

What is involved in fitting the full replacement roof against the roof skin??

is that the full replacement ??... sorry to sound dumb but if the roofs off what do u bond to!

 

the inner roof frame, or you dont even need to cut the roof off if you dont want to it will happily bond to the old roof

Full replacement needs a cage I thought ? To put the strength back in

 

Cheers guys. It's going to continue as work in progress as and when I get 'into' it. I've no plans of getting rid, just evolving!

My roof is the replacement version which has a foam type core for strength unlike the skin which is meant only as a cover and so does feel a bit flimsy but totally perfect if you want to just cover your existing roof. My roof, like most, had some rot so we cut it off as per the pics in my thread and carbon delights instructions. My car already had a half cage which I'm happy with. The strength of the a,b,c pillars is all still there I have just cut the 'fat' out (crust lol) and replaced it with a stronger material, carbon.

It's a great mod which once you've bought the roof, iirc about Ł550 lacquered including the a pillar covers, there's no other costs involved. For me it was fit and forget, no more rust bubbles behind the sunroof! It depends what you want your car to be but for my use it transformed the look plus made a significant weight saving.

Phil's attention to detail on these is brilliant and I think it's good value for the work that goes into making them.

i always thought a cage was needed but looking at your thread the strength is still there

 

I want one but will paint it . Any pictures of the inside as I would like to keep the trim

 

you would need a non sunroof headlining ,all the points where the headlining bars are held are not touched

phil will be doing a boot ,he is doing me a 1700t one at the mo ,he will offer this in carbon but i dont think it will be cheap

 

and im still waiting for my bits , only 6months now

 

cage will be needed if you go for the full replacement

 

What about if you just cut the sunroof selection out like danster76 did

 

almost forgot that i'm waiting for some door handles and those S1 arch protectors

 

I did cut the whole roof off. I have the replacement fitted, not the skin. Half cage and absolutely no issues or doubt in its strength.

Dave, any idea when you'll have the tailgate I'd like to have a look. Which car is this going on? I'd probably go for one if he goes ahead.

i`ll be ordering one as soon as i got a few bits sorted in my s1 and its driving.

removing the tray and trimming a couple inches around sunroof hole then bonding the carbon skin on too the old roof skin. cage not going in for a while.

Gonna cut the same selection that danster76 but with out the cage. Would that be ok

 

You need a cage if you cut the roof

Fitting a carbon roof will take strength out the shell if you cut the roof out !! best thing to do if you want to go down the route fit a cage even just a 6 point as long as its tagged to the a/b/c pillars and has one cross bar in the roof at least unless you think ur life is worthless

 

Carbondelight does a scuttle panel, have one on mine
