Default replacing steering rack

just wondered whats involved in changing the steering rack on my mk4 escort. i have about an inch of play either side (left to right) before the wheels move and diagnosed a knackered rack. is it difficult and if possible can someone advise me on what tools are needed so i can get everything together prior to changing. thanks in advance

disconnect the track rod ends, disconnect the steering column, unbolt the rack from the bulkhead, not a awful job but the rack securing bolts on the gearbox side can be awkward to get to. Re fitting is reverse of removal. You will need to get the wheel alignment set afterwards.

Make sure the car is supported safely on axle stands.

iirc the bolts to bulk head are 13mm head, as is the column to rack. prob 17mm for track rod ends.

The column only goes on the pinion in one position, so be careful when trying to attach it.
