Default Ford Escort RS 2 Full Resto - My first attempt

Hi guys,

I have posted bits and pieces on here before but I thought it best to start my resto thread.

Basically, I picked up a UK Import (G777 hum) in Ireland and the plan was to get her on the road within a few weeks. However, the rust was beyond reasonable cost, and over here in Ireland we have a registration tax that would have been in excess of €1000.

She is totally standard, has 4 new Toyo Proxies on her, orginal alloys which are all mint, very tidy interior, and cossie sterring wheel.

Pics below when I bought her

While the car sat in the yard I began to pick up parts here and there

And then the stripping began

I have managed to pick up a bonus shell which was in pretty much perfect condition apart from a small few spots that needed work and a full respray job.

I also managed to pick up the parts for a cossie rear brake conversion as well as the xr3i rear brake lines. I also have the xr3i res bottle to remove the damned escort rst abs system.

The plans are quite modest with doing a full transplant as well as:
*cossie rears
*underbody sprayed with zinc and 2K
*get and fit some gauges
*tidy up the RS suspension prior to fitting onto the bonus shell
*abs removal
*boring engine stuff like belts/service etc
*get and fit some kind of aftermarket exhaust

I am going to have loads and loads a questions so I am going to stick it all in here.

Il be armed with a halford prof socket set, few old screw drivers, haynes manual and my trusty lump hammer

Looks like a good base, I like the steering wheel! Nice change from a 4 spoke or the horrible standard wheel.

I was gonna say dont get too put off by the rot but you've got a new shell so no worries there!

Oh and are you sure its xr3i hoses for the rear? Just wondering, I bought sierra cossie ones from goodridge but the handbrake cable is from the xr3i or mk6 rs2000.

Good luck mate, one thing I would do different is leave the rear brakes alone and upgrade the front instead, if you dont you'll find the rear locks up first under hard breaking... Just like pulling the handbrake!!

Good luck, agree with Karlos...the rear brakes are more than sufficient. If you want them for 'looks' you NEED a brake bias valve to compensate.

thanks lads.

I plan to do front upgrade on the fronts too at some stage.

Ok got some questions.

1) in the pics below, are these sapphaire 2wd rear calipers? started to clean them up today?

2) Will I have to swap over the petrol tank from my s2 over to the base model?

3) Is the suspension on the RS different from all other models?

4) For lubing up the slider pins on the calipers will copper grease be ok or do I need lithiuam based?

5) Is is worth keeping the orginal exhaust or upgrade?

Yes you will need to swap the tank
suspension is lower and stiffer and the front antiroll bar is thicker and has a rear rollbar fitted
Copper slip will be fine
Exhaust depends what your going for standard or modified
If it was me id strip your base model then just transfer everything from the rs then you know its right then

Starting to take apart the rear suspension and clean/refresh them up. The rear shocks & springs are more a less brand new. The receipt came with the car. They are Monroe Sensatrac but I think that is more of an oem replacement rather then an aftermarket part.
Its a slow process. Need to get some proper metal paint and primer which I can load into my spray gone.
Any recommendations

I picked up some cossie front calipers but they are still to be delivered

Good work mate!
But I'd really advise either not fitting the cossie rear disc's or fit something more manly up front than the cossie calipers you have on the way, or a bias valve.... All your hard work could go to waste the first time you brake hard at speed otherwise!

Thanks I'm going go with aftermarket bias. I got the set up for free so could not not put them on.

Done a little clean up on the pedal assembly - installed new quadrant and bushes.

A small hint to the colour the car is going

Heat facia to match my white dials

Painted up one of the seat slider and the rear wiper

Picked turbo boost gauge up too

Why would she need to go on a spit?

Shell has been primed, only one small piece needed welding. Shell was mint once she was taking to metal.

Looking for another gearbox mount, didn't realise I needed two!

Thats a shame m8 as a re-shell will never be worth the same as a genuine s2 but you are cracking on with it, have got some more bits if interested m8?
