Rs onion getting hot.
Just a quick question, my onion turbo gets hot, when driving normally it sits just shy of the middle, but when I give it a bit of stick it sits just under the red, I have checked for leaks, air locks, the car has a front mounted intercooler with twin fans on it, could this be my problem, should the fans be on the rad, the rad is ally as well, this has only started to happen when I changed the front bumper, it had a standard orion front bumper with the grill cut out, now it has a 80 spec turbo bumper with grill in still, do I need to keep the intercooler free, do I need a wide gap for the rad/intercooler, as the gap at the mo is only about 5mm.
Would be great if someone could help?????

But I dont have any tell tail signs ie creamy liquid in the oil cap nor oil in the water, and head gasket was done a little while ago, what else could it be or do you think I will need to rip the head off, I have just seen a little leak comming from the turbo water return could this cause an air lock in the system and cause it get hot.

had this problem with my last 2 turbos with front mounts, made no real difference if the fans were on the cooler or rad, first one was a cracked head, other was head gasket and fans not getting enough juice, best redoo the fan wiring with its own power relay, they blow like fook then and kept it proper cool

Mine gets warms quickly if i gun it, i think its something to do with the front mount blocking air to the rad, my fans are on the front of the ic. When they kick in they seem to stay on for quite a while... Im going to use my ecu to control them, see if that helps how they operate. As for the heat when gunning it, i just presumed i was running lean - well i know i am afr's of around 15-15.5 on boost! Very lean!
Let us know how you get on!

sorry to hijack but i cant move my intercooler as it will interfere with the bonnet catch, do you know if i can put a 3rd fan on the radiator to the left of the turbo if i heat wrap the turbo elbow and downpipe?
Thanks

Take fans of cooler, take cooler out, put fans on rad, move rad back slightly put a bracket on the bottom of the rad in the centre drill 2 holes in crossmember and secure rad to crossmember with bracket, then put cooler on but spacing it out so it is near to the front bumper job done, this is how i did mine but i also have a bracket at the top in the centre, hope this helps m8

You want your rad/cooler to be as 'airtight' as possible. You want all the air going through the cooler to go through the rad too, not around it like it may if they're a big gap between them. When 'giving it stick' your fan will do nothing, as the amount of air being pushing in from the front due to speed will be much greater. Fans are just there for use in traffic.

I've never had much luck turbo charging vegetables, although I've never tried with an Onion.
My rad and intercoolers were set up like yours, I don't really have any issues unless i sit in traffic on a hot day. Im planning to upgrade to Kenlowe fans as these kick out more air than my current Spal's, Im also going to get a rad pack done, so my intercooler and rad have no gaps, I think both of these would help a lot.

Rob - Being a funny git as usual ... You're just racist against Orions lol!
Whats a radpack? You mean get them assembled together? Thats a good idea!
I think im going to get my ecu to run my fans eventually, but its when im driving that i tend to get hot... I'll see how it is now i can map it and view the afr's on boost!

Yes so thin sheet ali all round the intercooler and rad, tig welded. the sheet can be shaped to accommodate for the different sizes of the rad and cooler, then I could scrap the intercooler mounts as the rad mounts should be up to the job for both... I think most of the air from my fans escape between the intercooler/rad gap instead of being forced through the rad... so less cooling. I know a guy who's getting pretty good at tig welding too hint hint.
Im not racist against Orions, but i've never been a fan of onions, in fact we were thinking of building a ZT orion as a company track car, but we shall see.

Ohhh Do it Do it!! let me help... Fresh Onions, Mmmm!
Yeah good idea, well i tell you what when your cars all back on the road and sorted bring it down to me and we'll rough out some drawings/measurements and i'll tack some plates on and see if it all fits etc. You could use the intercooler mounts, i'd presume them to be stronger and the rad would sit further forward away from the turbo etc?
I like it, i might try that with mine you know!

Gonna stick mine off a relay but will take live from big wire that goes to starter motor rather than from battery. Anyone know where I can get a weather proof relay. I Want to locate it out the way down near the horn so I can hide wiring away neatly.
