You want your rad/cooler to be as 'airtight' as possible. You want all the air going through the cooler to go through the rad too, not around it like it may if they're a big gap between them. When 'giving it stick' your fan will do nothing, as the amount of air being pushing in from the front due to speed will be much greater. Fans are just there for use in traffic.
