Put some over the starter if you can't put it around the pipe!

I got this off ebay,

Plus a heat wrapped exhaust and i haven't had any starter issues. A cooked starter will turn over very slowly and draw loads of current. If your car turns over at normal speed but doesn't start you have another issue, probably a fuelling issue or slight air leak.

You sure it's not the purple relay under the dash ? I had "hot startting" issues to the point that even a trip to the petrol station could result in it not starting agin

I'd also be checking the wiring from the alternator to starter as I replaced a starter when I thought heat was the problem but turned out to be a wiring fault think it was a blue wire iir

Where does the earth wire go on the starter? Won't start when warm, i wrapped the down pipe but think the starter has been damaged from the heat already... Bloody nightmare going to get fuel

I'm having this trouble with my XR3i. It turns over and starts fine when cold. But after its been running for about 10 minutes and I turn it off, when I try to restart it turns over really slowly and flattens the battery really quick. As you say Davecrook1 I hate going to the petrol station as it is a gamble whether it'll restart! Also you have to be really careful not to stall it at the lights!
I tried wrapping heat wrap around the exhaust downpipe last weekend but that hasn't made any difference. There doesn't seem to be a heat shield fitted although there is a black piece of hard foam/plastic that sits between the starter and the downpipe?
I think my next option is to change the starter. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what starter to get? There seems to be tons on Ebay but I want a heavy duty one to give me peace of mind!!!

Cheers for looking,
LEE

How i sorted mine:

Removed starter, stripped down, removed all the cooked grease and rebuilt myself (easy to do)
Heat wrapped manifold & downpipe
Heat wrapped starter
Replaced wiring to starter (and alternator while i was at it)

Did all this about 6yrs ago and starter still turns just as happily as it did when i first did all this.

Use a zetec starter as they are smaller and are a direct fit on a xr3i

with 14 reply`s im sure you`ve got it covered.
basicly the reason for this is that it is pritty much a cvh starter which they never took into account us modding and upping the power in the turbo version.

the heat from the down pipe fry`s the grease in the soliniod and turns it to paste which jams the the throw when warm.
you can strip the soliniod clean and regrease, ( if you catch it in time)
if you don`t the shaft can swell and warp and will need replacing.

go to the scrappy and barter for a few chap
