Hi, i've got a few questions regarding my engine.
Its in for a rebuild getting it back on tuesday, but what oil should i use for running it in? from what ive read you need mineral oil but are there grades in mineral oil too?
The engine has new rod and crackshaft bearings , crankshaft regrind. new pistons ,pistonrings, cilinders bored. new valves , valveguides, valve stem seals, oil pump waterpump also a new camshaft ( original ford with new tappets ) but can i directly start the engine up and keep it at 2500 rpm for like 15-20 minutes when running in the camshaft?
ofcoarse watching oil press water temp etc.
or do i have to let it idle a bit and check if everything is ok then run the cam in?
Oh and last question, i also got the turbo in for a rebuild. what should i do with it before starting the car up? like putting a little oil in the core or something?
Thanks

You ae correct run the cam in as you say and you will noticabley hear it change once run in. As for running in oil Millers do some stuff for running in (Opie Oils sell it) but generally any mineral oil is good just ensure you change it plenty of times.
Yes fill the core with oil too otherwise it will be dry on startup and if you can get a hold of the turbo oil feed hose with in line filter as this will help protect your turbo from any particles in the oil (about £50 from Auto Specilaists). The filter itself is also replaceable so would treat that as an additional service item.
Also MSD do a magnetic sump plug which is worth its weight in gold (£10 roughly). Just wait till you see the afro of metal particles when you come to change your oil then you will know it was worth the little extra.
As for running in procedure i.e. miles speeds etc there are different theories. I took it easy for the first 500 changed oil another 500 changed again then filled with fully synthetic and gave it death once setup by a pro.

already have a magnetic sump plug from msd, i saw how good it worked when the engine was acting up with oil pressure and such the sump plug had LOADS of metal on it
So i decided to do the rebuild.
Do i have to change the oil filter everytime i change the mineral oil? and how long can i drive inbetween the oil changes?
Thanks for the help
Edit: Sorry didnt see last bit of the reply. so ignore what i said

Hi,
Hope this helps as here is the process i used..
0 - 250 Miles
Turn the boost down as much as poss and keeping it below 2.5k running on cheap 20/50 oil and a MSD mag plug.
Change oil and filter.
250 - 500 miles
20/50 cheap oil taking it to 3k or 70mph slow and steady..
Change oil and filter.
500 - 750 miles
10/40 decentish oil keeping it to 3k and or 70 mph slow and steady. (however i did give mine a little bit of a go after a run back from Silverstone up to about 85)
Change oil and filter.
750 - 1000 miles
Same as above really.
1000 miles
Change oil and filter and fill up with the oil your going to use and turn the boost up a little.
1500 miles.
Turn boost up again and if you want you can change oil again its up to you..

thanks will help alot, i was thinking about putting the boost to about 0.2 bar
But really only 2.5k rpm? ill be feeling like im driving my brothers diesel mondeo again![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
id like something more like 3k rpm max and the 0.2 bar boost so i still have a little go and not have to drive like an old man![Confused](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
Or is that me thinking wrong because of my young age
I'd better do what you guys suggest you got all the experience in rebuild engines

Once you have the camshaft properly run in - change the oil.
No reason for low rpm or boost levels after the camshaft run in period.
The rings seat very quickly -
If the tune is spot on no reason at all for low diesel like rev limits.

ok great, sad thing is i still have to get it setup. still going to drive it in gently though.
So is it ok if i drive like 1000 kilometers with mineral ( every 500 new oil and filter) and then with normal 10w40?
