you did 160+ with 230bhp...you gotta be crackin' 185mph with 300bhp

(haha couldn't resist )

But in seriousness, decent engine spec, will serve you well. Good luck.

Just re reading through the posts with a friend as he is looking at doing the same sort of thing. What are the valve spring shims used for?

Are they the same as standard but thicker and where could i get some of these? Do you use the satndard spring or still replace them with hight poundage?

depends what you want! karlos has fitted st170 springs into a blacktop head with 3mm shims under them, they are a higher poundage than the standard blacktop springs and he had them sitting there , i run up-rated springs with 3mm shims under them because it allows me to run about 5-6psi more when over 7k rpm and a hell of a lot cheaper than going for the double spring kit.

if i were buiding a cheap zetec again i would be trying 106gti springs!!!

If you decide to use the 106gti/saxo vts springs, make sure you use genuine parts. A lot of aftermarket pattern manufactures list zetec and these as the same part and theyre not the same poundage.
I have some shims made for my springs at a local engineering firm, lad did it in his lunch hour and charged me a fiver
