I would go for a silvertop zetec personally, either a 2.0 or 1.8 130bhp spec.

a '91 Orion could be a mk2 or mk3 so will really depend on which one!

If its a mk3 its a pretty straightforward job as its straight out the Escort and into your Orion, taking over full loom, injection etc.

if its a mk2 its harder cos the mount on the inner wing is totally different. I did one of these a few years ago into a mk4 XR3i and biggest bother was the mount. A metal fabricator I know ended up making a mount based on a mk4 CVH one and that got the engine in (bolts straight up to gearbox in your car with Zetec flywheel) but we had to abandon the project due to lack of premises. Think we would have also had problems with alternator set up as the PAS pump was removed.

Having driven a couple of RS2000's and having a few Zetecs now (I run a 2.0 in my mk4 Escort daily) I would opt for the Zetec everytime as I think it revs better.

In saying that, the I4 from an RS2k makes an awesome noise

Easy to do. U can either make a mount or chop the mouting plate off the car and weld in another and use the original rs2k one.
Use cvh alt bracket and tensioner and elongate the holes so it lines up.
Zetec flywheel + rst clutch. Use pre pats ecu and loom and its 4 wires to get u running.
Engine is heavier than zetec yes but I have 2 mk4s one with zetec one with rs2k.....rs2k one wastes the zetec from pullaway and once rolling in any gear.

I would go with that.

The i4 engine's are pretty heavy and not much BHP than the Zetec (Black-top having slightly more).

Altough, I have been tempted to use the 2.3 bottom end with the 2.0 head, heard they make a decent amount of power N/A.

loads of people reckon the i4 weighs shit loads more than the zetec, granted it is heavier but not enough to worry,
the i4 has 20bhp over a standard zetecs so i would say thats quite abit,

i say fit it, the i4 is a good strong engine and there is loads of development going on with these engines right now.
from low boost turbo conversions to big bhp turbos,
there are also so naughty n/a powered ones in the making.

jump on www.rs2000-16v.com for some great projects.

also if your orion is a mk3 you will need engine, ecu and loom gearbox, linkage,
hubs, driveshafts and subframe from the rs2000

Surely if you had two identical cars, one with a 2.0 i4 and the other with a 2.0 Zetec, then there would not be much in shape of performance?

The i4 may well have 20bhp more, as you say, but the weight and the higher centre of gravity would make it almost on par as a Zetec.

I honestly like Zetec's purely from my earlier years with Fords. But Ive always admired the 2.3 i4's with ITB's, especially the Mk6 4x4.

I've owned two 2.0 Zetec MK6 Escorts and two RS2000s. Not a huge amount between them in an all out fight, but the RS drives better, delivers its power better, sounds better, is geared better, there's just no contest comparing standard engines, I4 all the way.
