Well good luck then! I'm planning to do everything that's possible myself... It will be hard that's for sure! I'm just a cook, never did anything technical. But I think it will be allright! Got many help overhere in Holland

Final Pic now its totally finished and sealed for transit just to finalise this topic. Ive left them large so you can click on em if required.

When the clutch arrives i may put that on too as most RST owners will never have seen the new Alcon 6 Paddle.

2500, it was going to be 2000 but got the Alcon clutch and a headwork done aswell,
new valves, then there was labour to remove broken head bolts, valve guides and
seats, and a S2 flywheel for the clutch, i have spent approx 3500 with the purchase
of intercooler, turbo being rebuilt to my desired spec, brakes, new hoses, some more under bonnet shiney stuff and the powder coating, dont intend on selling the car any time soon and i inherited the money so i aint to bothered, its the first car
i have had that i have spent a lot of money on. just need to get rear arches
resprayed and then i will be happy as larry

It looks like its worth the money mate, built ina very clean enviroment, i might get stu to do me a rebuild as ive nearly finished my RST Powered MK5 Fully stripped with cage and seats, with 220 BHP it should go well, thats my aim anyway but the engine has done about 75000 miles so im not gonna bother modifying it till its has a rebuild!

We discussed price etc on another topic, but remember that a common mistake made is having an engine built and then changing your mind on specification. This is an expensive error, largely because your engines:

Bearing clearances.
Bore Clearances.
Compression Ratio.
Ring pack Gap.
Camshaft Kit.
& Turbo charger.

Will all be specced to ultimately suit this end result.
Try to get it right NOW rather than be forced to compromise later.

Top of my head, A CVH build to essentially a STD blueprinted spec requires:

Machine work usually required:
Rebore existing block
Bore Honing (cross hatch)
Crank grind / polish
Dynamic Balancing
Decompress pistons
Surface Grind Flywheel

New parts always fitted
Mahle Pistons and rings.
Performance full cam kit.
Crank & big end bearings.
Thrust washers. (U&L)
Oil Pump.
Water pump.
ARP Big end bolts.
Genuine Gaskets and seals.
Genuine Head Bolts.
Cambelt. (Gates OE).
Cambelt tensioner.
Thermostat and seal.
Cooling fan Switch
Dash temp gauge sender
Ford 071 plugs
Dist cap and rotor arm
8 new rocker locknuts
Block to turbo oil pipe
Mineral Oil and OE filter

Labour on top of that work/parts as i have a family to feed the same as you folks

That lot, pans out around Ł2200 all in.
But you may still need.....

Full Cylinder head overhaul:
Pressure test
8 Valve guides
8 valve seats
8 valves re-cut to seats
Surface skim
Block Reface.
Head reface.

Optional upgrades:
Stage 3 big valve cylinder head
Duralloy vernier timing pulley
Cosworth forged pistons.
Steel H section Connecting rods.
Steel crank.
Alcon 6 paddle clutch.

With your engine bill you always get:
A CD with lots of pictures of your engine build in various stages of strip and build. The ones above are resized low resolution versions just to illustrate Andys topic for him. The CD will have about 100 pics in different sections. (Strip/probs/cleaning/machining/building etc)

You also get paperwork which consists of:
Itemised invoice listing every part.
Engine refittment guide with hints and tips.
Engine running in and oil change guide.
Technical spec sheet including bearing clearance big end bolt length, compression ratio and much more.

Im sure most will agree that its good value for money when you look at what you actually get compared to some places that seem to think a few rings and a new set of cheap shells constitutes a full engine rebuild

No worries Stu. You looked pretty busy. I would have stopped later but had to go and get ready to go out. Incidently I was back at home by midnight as I was dropping asleep!

The engine is mint. Just could do with a bit more horse power! We'll see what it can do when I get the "other" modifications on it!

modification to caliper to fit, and thats just 1, will do other tomorrow as will only

Car should be good when it's done though mate. Bet you can't wait! You still gotta run it in as well though! That is boring!

I can't wait until mine is running full power and handling properly.

Me, loaded, no way,

running engine in is going to be a bit of a bore, just going to take a couple

been told motorway miles are a no go.

You have to vary the load on the engine and not keep the revs constant.

I went up Beacon fell, Trough of Bowland and Rivington cos it's up hill down hill and windy roads. Lots of gear changing and varied revs. Plus a bit of town driving and up to Southport/Blackpool via A roads.

The burrette is used to insert and measure fluid into the the cylinders to obtain capacity and compressed volume. From this you can calculate compression ratio.

A compression test is nothing more than a guage to measure how much air the cylinder is capable of displacing, more precisely what pressure.

(X+Y)/Y = Z

X is capacity of 1 cylinder
Y is compressed volume or combustion chamber volume inc head gasket thickness
Z is compression ratio.

Eg. 2 litre engine, 1 cylinder is 500cc and combustion chamber is 50cc (this is only random figures of the top of my head)

The equasion would be......

(500+50)/50 = 11:1

Any help?

excellent thread and love the progress pics, engine looks spot on mine was as fresh as that about 2 years ago

question can you workout the compression ratio with the engine built up and in the car?

Cheers,
