Default Turbo rebuilding

Boys
my car is smokin White with bit of blue.
I'm expecting to rebuild my bottom end as compression was about 130.
Took turbo off and there's a bit of side to side play and in and out play too.
Would this be causin smoke ?
Don't know what it drives like as it's sorn under resto and I've never driven it on road.

I guess I should rebuild turbo regardless cos there's play in shaft.
so what's best ?
Rebuild ?
Buy second hand ?
Who's best place to rebuild it ?
Cheers lads

Get it rebuilt by a pro... I had a go at rebuilding my t3, it reduced play in the shaft and boosted fine but after a week or 2 the exhaust side oil seal blew and caused it to poor oil down the exhaust and smoke quite badly...

Just a matter of interest, is 130psi a bad result for a comp test then?

rebuild it yourself and get it balanced at a local turbo place.
there are loads of really fiddly circlips though and you'll need fine pliers (circlip removal tool to get these out).
place near me charges £30 IIRC to balance a turbo, so worth doing it yourself if you have ample tools and bearings aren't too worn.

What did you use to balance it? Or is your idea of "fine" very different to mine?

Out of curiosity, if the main shaft is kept and you are only changing the bearing and seals, what is there to go out of balance? I guess you have to remove the turbine, and if it has been balanced as a whole rotating assembly it could go out of balance if the turbine isn't in the same place?

Rob,

The nut also needs to be at the same orientation dont forget Rob as well as putting the compressor wheel back on at the same index as before relative to the turbine wheel (which is normally a fixed part of the shaft)

Its all marked up from the factory, because as ive said before most turbos are balanced OUTSIDE the cartridge, taken appart, then re-built back into the cartridge. So if im not changing any rotating parts, and i take them appart and re assamble them in EXACTLY the same way then what is there to balance? yes if you are changing a wheel, or the nut then ys, get it balanced, but if its all marked up, yes chip that includes the nut, and it all goes back together the way it came appart then it will be fine.

here we see a turbo assembly being balanced OUTSIDE the cartridge, in order to get it in the cartridge AFTER balancing, it will need to be marked up , disassembled and re built the same way. I hope this helps everyone understand a little better. Chaffe

May i also add that the mark on the nut acts as a very good torque setting, as this was its exact possition before.

Chaffe a good explanation there... Ive tried to explain this to a few ppl and it fell on deaf ears.

Ultimately if in doubt get it balanced and reassembled by a pro, but do the majority of rebuilding yourself.

I used RADesigns for my turbo, gave me a good discount as i sent a spare t3 for them to use as "scrap".

Chaffe, if you are that thorough about putting it all back exactly as it came apart like that, then you are right it should indeed be fine (assuming it was fine to start with of course!)

Doing a compression test should be done after the car has been run for 20mins.You then test each cylinder for compression.Normally anything below 120psi points to wear and tear.140 to 160psi or more is about right. All depends on on the build of the engine.

Yeah he's right I had a compression test about 8 months ago at Jamsport and it was reading 140psi on all four and Jamie said it was fine.
