imho, No not at all. The drums are quite capable of stopping the car if you look after them. Rear disc conversions tend to cause the rear of the car to be overbraked unless you spend some time on the right bits to set them up properly.

As oranoco has said m8 most of the braking power comes from the front and with a rear disc conversion unless you have a bias valve you run the risc of the back of the car overtaking the front when you brake lol a nice set up on the front is all you need really imo

Thats what i was thinking, keeping the drums and adjust them properly. The pedal feels a little bit spongy, dunno if the servo is on its way out!!

Spongy pedal would point towards air in the system or master cylinder pegging out. I usually find it to be the former.

I would say it was a great upgrade if fitted & setup correctly. I love mine and they are spot on but tbh have heard some horror stories of cars spinning when braking hard, how true that is i dunno

It's VERY true! lol
Stick with drums and upgrade the fronts if you want better brakes, or if you must go rear disc do the front aswell with something really good, I run 300mm FST brakes on the front and still the back locks up first!

I cant understand why people have so much trouble i have rear discs and never had a problem. I have 335mm ap 4 pots on the front no abs got rid of the standard compensators for inline ones and before people say its because i have big brakes on the front i used to have st170 brakes on front

You have inline compensators, so obviously you have balanced them! Either that or you dont brake hard enough?! lol

Brilliant IMHO,
My setup.

Cossie front calipers and discs
rear cossie discs and calipers
rs2000 handbrake cable
Abs Removed
working rear compensators
Blead properly with load on the rear on dot 5.1

I have very good brakes never had a problem.

My mate on the other hand my setup came off a mates car all the same apart from the fact that he removed the rear compensatiors and was quite sketchy under hard brakeing!

I would wack a bias valve if i had any problems!

oh and the drums look wank imo

cheers john

IMO i think you would have a hard time fading the rear drums.... unless on track, i never did, faded the fronts plenty (cossy disks and rst callipers), AND the hand brake on drums is loads better.

You'd be better off spending half the money refurbing the standard brake system and properly removing the ABS.

Rob,

So basically rear discs not needed but if you do make sure you ditch the abs and get inline compensators

nice little setup if done rite, but tbh if the drums are serviced etc...there more than upto the job, its the fronts which need sorting ideally, disc conversion is great for track use tho

Total waste of time, look at a lot of the hot hatch cars, they disconnect the rear brakes.
The drums as said are way more than up to the job, with the amount of traction you can generate from the very lightly loaded rear wheels.

I'd like to add, some people might prefere keeping the rs looking standard from the outside.Nothing wrong with oldskol drums, that have no problem doing the job they were built for.

ive never used HI- specs tbh but heard mixed opinons, most people highly rate them, and being 4 pots with 300mm discs you wont go far wrong, or maybe use some old sierra 4 pots, or maybe 4x4 cossie jobbies if your on a tight budget

I had the rear brake disc conversion done, 4x4 brand new cossie set up along with brand new compensators valves which are set up right, abs removed and up front are almost standard brakes and my rears never lock up under hard braking.

Good Answers, been wondering this myself.
Im on 300mm Fronts with mondeo mk3 calipers, Orion/XR3i rear drums with ebc greenstuff shoes and they r fine. Set the handbrake up so 2clicks locks the rear wheels and they have been faultless!

Get the rear end refurbed and minty and you wont go far wrong - this is how my rear brakes looked once i tidied them up a bit and now no probs - running 2.1zvh with 4x4 cossie front and standard RS rears.

^ Nice. I've never had my drums fail to slow me despite being described by my tuner as being "an animal" (thanks.... I think ) behind the wheel

I would come if I knew what I was doing lol

I've got rears sitting in the shed (300mm) but can't be asked putting them on, lol.

There's a guide up top "rs turbo" page highlighting what you need to do.

only reason i would even contemplate fitting them would be to look nice behind some spokey wheels that you could actually see them behind! seeing as i have standard wheels on mine i wont bother as i find the drums to be perfect for the job therefore disk brakes are completley unnecesary

I have a FRST and I have Cossie 4x4 Tarox disks and ford calipers. on hot summer days with sticky Tarmac I can get the rear wheels to lift off...... The vast majority of the braking is done at the front. so I don't realy see the point of disks at the rear apart from looks.
