guys when looking at my engine on the end of the cam it says
x428...
and after searching this ive been told its a power engineering psx428 camshaft .... so how good are these and would they be able to hit 280bhp with a t34 and greys ... or should i take it out and get a decent cam now.
ive been speaking to companys that will make me up a custom cam to suit my engine and including solid lifters and valve springs to match with everything needed is only £395 so is it worth changing now or seeing what the cam i have is like as its mint
Best cam out there imo,had one on my s2 years ago.
realy as ive been getting mixed views on it .... and my engine is a fully done out engine on gotech and t34 and now with grey injectors ... and im looking to run around 2bar boost , so will the cam be ok for this
Personally if i had a beantin again id go for a newman cam,my grey s2 had the p/e cam in it and ran 231 bhp,so on a t34 id say you could get 280.
its because i just want to do the car once and not to mess about so i might just get that camkit ive seen and sell mine as mine can be heard running and dont even tap a little
the one in my car is mint and the tappets aint even noisey but i need something that will make the power right upto the limiter .... at say 280+hp and if this cant then it will be for sale
2 bar,you really going to run 30psi.Good stuff if you are.Be interesting to see the results.A custom cam for £400 is pretty cheap.I was told 500 to 700.Who doing the cam for you mate?
its a kent cam its like a cvh37 but for solid lifters give a power band of 2500-7000rpm and yes im looking at running 2bar and it should see anything from 280bhp to just under 300bhp
Setting aside the profile, any CVH cam made by Piper or Kent, in my experience, isn't going to last. So, as Stu said, fit the best of whats available, Newman.
The only advantage to running a second hand cam is that after meassuring up to make sure it's within tolerance (or as close to) is that it wont fall apart (already work hardened) and send swarf round your nice new engine destroying your bottom end lol
ive had my pe cam in 11 years now and its still as quiet as the day i fitted it, always made decent power and still is in its latest zvh guise, along with the pe stage 3 head which i fitted at the same time are probably the most reliable bits on the motor quality parts imo

.....which goes entirely out of the window once you fit it with different followers.

its not that i have had the head and cam for awhile but its never done more than a 1000 miles and before putting it on this bottom end i had the ports opened up more as it was just your standard stage3 spec big valve head ... and the cam was the original cam for my engine but was just wondering if it was man enough for my aims of 280+hp now i have the t34 and greys
Only way you'll know for sure is to get the spec then and compare it to the likes of the Newmans and CVH37 etc.. or speak to someone who knows what cam spec is needed for your target BHP, Christan, Karl Norris, etc..
well most people say newman and then a couple including jano says cvh37 but the newman seems to be on most these days... so wont the pe cam do the business .... but i need to get solid lifters so i can rev to around 7k with no problems
I dont know the spec of the PE cam so have no idea, but I went for a Newman when I built mine because they do seem to be the best of a bad bunch and of course have solids for higher rpms (not that I actually rev that high but it's future proofing).
if u dont end up using the pe cam how much do u want for it i had one in my last rs and i loved it wish i had takern it out befor i sold it as u can no buy them
Mate, just run the engine with this cam. You will soon see if it makes the power or not. If it doesn't... swap it for something else.
And newmans fail too mate, its mixed reviews on them all. Im personally fitting a cvh34 and sorting out better lubrication because i like the profile, aiming for 250ish so we shall see,
The PE sx428 cam is a kent cvh34 which was made in conjunction with ahmed b and rebranded by PE. Got told this when i was at grove garage years by ahmed.
the PE cams were made years ago from good blanks, before the change to chocolate
Matt is correct the P.E sx428t was made by piper the guy who designed the piper cams was behind the P.E cam as he had the copyright to the profile or something like that. I was told that by power engineering themselfs.
