i made the two gearbox mounts mate, only front and back ones though, as for the inner wing, it doesnt need much, just a wee bit clearance for the plate with three bolts on the end of the box. what are you doing for shafts and gear linkage?

standard focus linkage is fine as long as its from a mtx and not a ib5.

cool, i cut mk5 tdi shafts and re-machined splines on the end for the mk4/3 outer cvs, although a mate has done a conversion on a golf and has cut and welded shafts, also with success. how did you make yours?

sleeve over then weld?, people worry too much! the shafts i mentioned that are welded are in a 2.8 v6 turbo golf, they havent broken either lol. the mtx75 conversion is the future btw, i dont know why anyone would persue the bc box originally designed to take 90bhp max.

LOL way of the future... Been doing this for 10years plus. Old proven conversion now mate.

As for sleaving drive shafts. Think of this..

Your doing X amount of HIGH speed when your shaft snaps at the sleaved join.

Still attached to the hub it is now turning at X amount of high speed and cutting your floor a new hole, as well as your legs or your passangers legs. Lets hope enough of your leg stays in one piece so you can still use the breaks if the shaft hasnt ripped your brake line off your shell at that point.

Not a very clever idea.

The std shaft is hollow and has a certain amount of twist which is needed to stop shafts from snapping, Due to the low cost material they use to be able to twist there is no choice but to weld the ends from factory. This is not great and has been seen fail many times including snapping them in other places than on the weld.

If you now mess with these in any way, trying to make them longer or shorter etc. you risk the chances of causing issues at a later date. I have seen MTX shafts that have been cut and shut destroy the underside of a Fiesta RS Turbo back in 1999. If he had passangers God knows what would of happened.

Also when welding a spline section on to the shaft that has been cut etc it needs to be put on precisely, as if its at any slight angle imagine the turning shaft being out of balance at 130+mph

If your going to the effort of fitting the decent box why would you cut such an important part of the conversion out. Just to save a little money??? its not worth putting crap parts on your car made by a random people who have no experiance with metals and materials that do and dont work with each other.

Custom drive shafts i make are made from high grade quality metal, sent away to have the correct splines cut in, after they are heat treated, they are also rated to 2500bhp with warrenty thats its not going to leave you without legs at any point in your life.

Next lets talk prices? What the cost of random cut and shut shafts. Someone at first needs to buy them, then cut them, then prep and weld them, then hope they dont fall apart and kill anyone. This must cost a fair bit. So just pay the little extra and have peace of mind.

i cut my own splines mate as i am a precision machinist to trade. not one for welding shafts but i would if there was no other option, as for spring in shafts, im not too sure about that, surley all steel has a small degree of spring? but the springs on your friction plate are there to take up drivetrain shock, not the driveshafts imo. What is the grade of the quality material you make your shafts from? Not dissagreeing with you just intersted in your methods, after all i would probably never of put my first MTX in if it wasnt for the pics on your old website.

Depends what box you want to use? You can get a standard MTX box for £100-200 then you need shafts, off Jano bout £500ish, but people on here make sleved ones that are very good for a lot less than half that price! Then you need mounts and clutch.

Cool, first one i did had std diff, last one was helical lsd, i ran both for over a year as my daily driver, one was 1800 zetec turbo other 2 litre zvh, both had no drivetrain problems at all. even doing daft things like 3rd and 4th gear wheel spins, all the usual FWD nonsense lol.

MK5 escort tdi ones, that come with the mtx boxes, same as rs2k ones, i cut 10mm off one, 30mm off the other, and turn the OD down on them both, then mill new splines on the CNC mill mate, i use a spare outer CV to gauge the splines to a perfect fit.

unsure of diameter but vauxhall were kind enough to use different parts on different cars which fit together, nova shafts off say a 1.2 are 21 spline iirc and gte shafts are 23 spline,23 spline shafts fit 1.6 diesel astramax van inners which fit the f16 and f20 gearboxes.a friend with a let nova bought proper shafts from peter maiden as he built a mega nova years ago and thought that he would try out the 'proper' shafts, they broke and he went back to made up shafts which stayed on the car till it vanished a few years ago.the shell is still waiting for you to come and pick it up!ryan, you had your chance to sell to me but im no going back to a s2 now.

I have a feeling your going to be getting a few PM's mate, as nice non welded solid shafts for only the price of your labour and the orignal MK5 shafts from a scrappy is going to be far cheaper than the £500 for Jano's ones!
Being rated to 2500bhp is overkill when BC shafts mostly hold out at 300bhp+ so these ones will do 99.9% of all RST owners without any probs!
