Default Double Din Head Units...

Has anyone fitted one in place of the heater vents/controls and moved the controls down to the single DIN slot? If so any pics?

Cheers!

Never seen that done before no, but i have seen a few Orions with the headunit moved down to where the amp was and 3 gauges inplace of the stereo. nothing exactly groundbreaking i know.

Yeah i've seen that too.
Was thinking a double din 7" screen head unit would look realy nice if done neatly..... perhaps I'll give it a go!

That could look good yeah, it'd certanly be more visable than in place of the stereo anyway.

i started to play around with a double din tv headunit out of an import evo, with the intention of building it in like this

i just got very annoyed trying to make up suitable support for such a heavy unit, as its kind of just empty space behind the heater controls. plus where the dash drops down slightly above, it was just too close to the top of the unit, n i figured its either gonna melt the dash or overheat the unit lol

if u have the patience to brace the unit somehow, in a position where it isnt gonna melt stuff or overheat itself, then it shud just simply be a case of making up a nice fascia surround to fill the void around the unit

Be good to see this.
I've often thought of using the space for a touch screen, run it to a small PC in the boot or under a seat for a full 'av/nav/game' system.
If done well it could look very good imho. Could even run wifi on it to a router in your garage - so when you park it 'docks' and syncs MP3s and the like with a 'master' PC.

Never tried myself as I dont have the fundage to play with.

Just but an ipod. Job done, but as to the double din unit.... there are some very nice units around, with built in gps too which is always a bonus, if car audio is your kettle then im sure it would be cool mate.

Supporting the weight is easy enough just bolt a bracket to the bulkhead, overheating shouldnt be a problem I wont be using the internal amp to run any speakers so should stay pretty cool.
Hopefully if money allows i'll get something in there!

Yeah, those Pioneer DEH P88RS II's are dead cheap ain't they

I'm planning on fitting a double din unit down where the fader and tape holder currently are..

Well compared to £750 for the Kenwood DNX 8026BT that I was looking at (had to be a face off jobby so Alpine and Pioneer where out of the question) it's quite cheap!! lol

I've got the older (really quite old now) version if that in my daily, its the only thing i take from car to car with me, best car stereo i have ever had, tried all sorts of hi end alpines etc before it and nothing came close, the internal pre amp and proper HF/LF filters are brilliant, the only thing i have heard that sounds better (quality wise) was one of the more expensive nakamichi units.

I used to run a KEH P9700R for about 11 years till the volume turned itself up to full one day and wouldnt go back down! lol
I think the button was just stuck on internally but no amount or prodding would free it off and I thought it's about time a bought a new one!

That had almost identical features to the DEH P88RS II..
Cost me £1000 with a 12 disc changer all those years ago!!

I've been running a DEH P7700MP for the last 3 years but fancied a change....

So went with the DEH P88RS II...

Needless to say I like my Pioneer head uints! lol

Mine old unit is the DEH-8400MP, still sounds brilliant, replaced its fascia ribbon cable a few times over the years but still going strong, remember looking at the DEH P88RS at a show when it was first released and thinking it looked pretty sexy!

Ah one of these bad boys....

Yeah the ribbon is always the weak point in these type of HU, I was lucky really as mine never went in 11years on the KEH P9700R and that had a lot of use, I practically lived in my car back then! lol
