worried about getting ripped off!
hi im looking some advise on tuning my 1988 escort rs turbo. shes pretty standard apart from bailey dump valve and full scorpion exhaust system. im looking to get her up to the 180/200 bhp mark without spending a fortune. i called out to my local tuning garage momentum motorsport. they said they do a turbo exchange and upgrade the internals witha 360 degree bearing for £700, should it be that expensive? they said for £1000 all in they would upgrade the turbo put on a new actuator, a boost controller and a chip which shoud see 180 bhp. any help or advice appreciated guys cheers

ok well just to clarify
it would of cost new 3k (prices of parts have gone down since so probably around £2.5k now thats with engine etc)
also i never said i paid 3k for it i said its cost 3k as most of the parts i bought secondhand although i bought most as one item
so its probably cost in the region of £1500 without a rebuild of engine or box
but thats over 4 years its now in the process of coming out and having a rebuild although it will just be cleaned checked and new gaskets and a lick of paint for time being save for a full rebuild later as i run on a budget then have setup properly and rolling roaded to get an exact bhp figure as when i bought engine got told it was around 200 but i have seen figures and people always think its more than it actually is so expecting around 180-190 to be realistic

180bhp can be obtained on a standard turbo with a -31 actuator, about a bar of boost, chip, filter and exhaust (not scorpion).
Taz, the rad, turbo cooler, dump valve, hoses and breather is not adding any power so shouldn't be included in the parts list required to obtain 180bhp.

whats the matter with the scorpion system?
so is it not worth me upgrading the turbo?

You'll not benefit from the turbo unless you plan to use it to it's potential. That means head work, cam, ditching the scorpion, bigger cooler and more boost with possibly a fifth injector. You're power output will then be up around 240ish. The bigger turbo will be more laggy than the standard.

ok so if i replace my scorpion back box, get an ecu chip a 31 actuator and a set up i should see 180bhp with the standard turbo? anythin else should know? im gettin a refurb on my head first but dont want a silly big cam. prob go for a lightened flywheel and an upgraded clutch and decent ht leads/ change fuel filter and new rotor arm

Yes you will see 180 from the standard turbo. You'll only need the larger turbo for more power. The scorpion back box is more restrictive than a standard exhaust by the way. You're loseing power with it on.

Not sure you can but you are better off with a full system as i think the scorpion back box is longer so is not inter changeable with a mongoose they come up quite often on here and on ebay so have a look, and as karlos g has said decent chip, -31, decent exhaust, air filter, decent alloy intercooler (front mount) and a set up by a decent tuner karl norris, jamsport etc will see 180-190 bhp providing your metering unit is in good enough order

can you still get a decent result from buying these parts 2nd hand? what about a 2nd hand stage 2 turbo?
