Default Is it possible to fit a longer 5th gear?

As above really, the IB5 box i'm going to be fitting has quite a short final drive (similair to an XR3i) and so will be high up in the revs at motorway speeds.
I was wondering if it's possible to fit a longer 5th gear retaining the final drive for 1st-4th acceleration? Or would this not work as there would be less teeth and so not engage properly?

Oh and if anyone knows where I can buy a BC/IB5 5th gear puller that would be very handy as I cant find one for shit!! lol

Cheers!

Yes it sure is mate, guy whos going to be building my box has messed around with several final drives to drives to bring the revs down on the motorway. Will find out what they are, iirc the last one he did was a 3.5 final drive which bought the revs down to around 2.5k at 80mph

I know you can change the final drive mate, but it's 5th gear itself that I wondered if you can change?
I'd like to keep the FD as 1st through to 4th gives nice quick acceleration but a longer 5th would be nice for motorway cruising etc..

Fairly sure it's possible, try a Ka 5th gear - that's really long. Mate of mine had a Ka turbo conversion he did himself, rebuilt his IB5 with ST150 gears 1 -4 and left the Ka's 5th gear in because it was so long, so he had loads of accelleration and a cruising gear.

There is a 0.76 5th gear ( same ratio as RS Turbo 5th ) available for the IB5, I have a pair here for a custmer, try a 1400 Fiesta

It has a 0.76 5th gear, I need a longer one! lol
The final drive is 4.25 which is great for acceleration 1st-4th but 5th needs to be longer for better economy on the motor way, or at least I would like it to be!

Not really helpful, but I've always found that a long final drive have given the best acceleration on a turbo car with good powerband.
As an extreme example. The best 0-100km/h times were achieved with using second gear only. When power is everywhere, shifting just loses time.
I've had all the ratios, started from 3.84 then to 4.27 and now happiest at 3.54.

I to have used all of those final drives and much prefer 4.27 for normal driving, it's just at cruise you are high up in the revs, 3.52 is a joke for road use I could do 20-110mph in 3rd gear when I was using that FD might as well have been an automatic! lol
It says in that thread that the diesel 5th is 0.76 which is the same as what I already have mate

Ahh OK in that case you're stuck, 0.76 is the highest ratio 5th there is. You'd need to drop the final drive a touch to get what you want.

have a look on turbosport in the rs turbo section there is a sticky about rebuilding rs gearbox's where different gears are used, i think someone used escort ka puma and focus gears in one to get a proper sorted box

you could always lower your fd to the 4.06 one and then use the ratio's out of the 1.4 cvh motors that have shorter gears 1-4 and put your .76 5th in that should get you what you want quick 1-4 and a slightly longer 5th for motorway

Yeah thats a good idea, but to be honest I cant be arsed scrapping around finding and stripping box's, if I could have just bought a 5th gear from somewhere and fitted it whilst I was fitting the LSD then I would of, not a biggy really!
Cheers!

lol!
as said the series one box/gearset will not do 2k @60mph.
i have one and sits at 3.5k@ 70mph ish.
if this ever gets resolved then i'd like to know as fifth gear runs out of puff so easily.
