Fed up with my car keep breaking gearboxes.
As Ive already put in another post my gearbox has gone again after only lasting around 1k miles. Its a cts stage 2 box and in all fairness im not to sure how well it was rebuilt last time.phoned a few specialists not to far from me and no one seems bothered about doing the job, need someone who can collect the car and take it away and do a proper full rebuild on they box not just throw it back together. Think it might stand more of a chance if done properly. Was thinking of going mtx route but just got a quote back of nearly 3k and to be honest I really dont want to spend that much at the current time. So with all that in mind does anyone have any suggestions as im willing to be good money for a good job

mtx could be done for far less.
mtx box £100
strip and rebuild £300
atb diff £600
so for a grand you've got a good box.
selector setup £50
hydraulic clutch setup £100
new bigger clutch £400 or less depending on make etc.
custom drive shafts circa £200-300
so around £2k if i do the maths with someone fitting it i reckon, not a lot of work involved really and the same route my xr2 zvh turbo will be going after the wedding.
Although i'm just going to fit a non atb box in first just to get all the parts sorted, so around £1k then spend on an atb diff later and rebuilt box.

Find a gearbox form a 1989-1995 Ford taurus SHO.
Same bolt pattern as 1.6 cvh.
You will require a different clutch disc as these ones are 7/8" 20 spline input shaft.
There is also a Quaiffe diff available for this gearbox.
These gearboxes were standard on the 3.0 and 3.2 Yamaha V6 engines.
MTX 75 is also a great option - I think it requires some cutting as it is longer
than stock gearbox.

Going from bad to worse. Spoke to a good place near me. They said last full rebuild on a rs turbo box was quite a while back but was around £350 plus fitting it back in. Not bad at all I thought worth a go for that. They said they would get back to me with an exact price. Just called me back £820 ffs.

It's probably worthwhile just stumping for an MTX. Even if you rebuild the CTS box there's no telling how long it will last. They just don't seem to take the power in high spec cars from what I've seen.
MTX seems the cheaper option in the long run!

I was breaking RST gearboxes often with around 220 ft/lb of torque, i went down the scrappy and bought an ib5 gearbox from a 1.4CVH MK6 Escort with 90k on the clock for £50, just to get me mobile again and that was 18months ago, the gearchange is perfect, no stiring soup, iv driven 15k on this gearbox and its only coming out the car so i can fit the LSD out of my shitty rst box. only thing i needed to buy was a larger thrust bearing for the ib5 box.

From: In my garage, coventry
I have had my gbox rebuilt a number of times at cts
I had it built just before i did another track day ,
It wasnt good coming into a corner not being able to select the correct gear,
I have a lightweight tripple clutch which mark pointed out you need for high rev gear changes
There was also a bad vibration through the car which i suspect is the box which i think may have been one of the factors of my engines demise,
Im going to be looking at the tremec i know real steel do them as does Martin
I think this could be the way forward ,
I know a lot of 10 sec american drag cars use them and there cars arnt exactly light weight the only concern i have is that there bolted to relativley low reving v engines
and as Dingy has commented would the box be anygood on the back of a high rever on track ???

It was only a std slip diff rst box. But still.

hes been running that box for ages with well over 300+hp
probably will break sometime, but if jamie dont want to spend serious cash yet speak to stu, he will put you in the right direction. it will put you on untill you sort what you want to do
