Default Engine rebuild questions....

Hi, i went and got my s2 set up at power engineering, they done a great job!, cylinder 3 was down on compression tho (only 90psi) so its not running great. im going to be rebuilding the engine within the next few weeks so its running all good again. what does everyone recommend? my car isnt majorly tuned just a few litte bits (chipped, -31 actuator etc). genuine pistons and rings, bearings etc? how much am i looking at for parts and where from? first time rebuilding a cvh so need some pointers for parts etc.

secondly the ignition timing was retarding on boost....the knock sensor was however just pushed out the way not in rag (previous owner) if i get a new knock sensor and wrap it in rag do you think it will sort it, or shall i just screw it into the side of the inlet as there is the hole for it to scre into? or he said it may be the ecu?
cheers fellas

Hi mate, 90psi is terrible so a rebuild is a good idea!

You only need pistons if your going oversize (this will depend on the bore wear) and you do not need conrods.
You will need a full gasket set, full bearing/shell set, rings, and i'd get a new cam/lifters, water pump, and oil pump too.
All these things can be bought from Burton Power so go to their website and price it all up mate although some things can be found cheaper else where but it's a good place to start, if you dont need pistons then i'd say around Ł450 for the rebuild if just replacing like for like and not upgrading things.
Retarded timing on boost is either Knock sensor (wraped in rag out the way is the best place for it!), ECU, or ACT sensor.

nice one mate! im going to take the head off within the next few days to make sure a sticky valve etc isnt causing the problem! even though its 90 psi on no.3 cylinder and the timing is retrding on boost it still came out with 185lbs of tourque but only 160bhp

mine after fitting a knock senson, out the inlet manifold.. the car ''flying''. Acceleration now has nothing to do with the past... 15 GBP including postage to Greece for a good working knock sensor is a good price and my problem solved...

it depends what some people class as an engine rebuild, in my books a rebuild is exactly that, whole engine is stripped, block checked and cleaned up, bores honed, crank regrind, new mains and big ends, new rings, new cam kit, all new gaskets, new cambelt, tensioner, water pump, etc etc.

but providing the pistons and rods are ok you shouldnt need to change them really unless the block needs to be over bored.
