Default Trick of the trade. Fuel Pump relay...

Got a problem with your fuel relay?...

as you all know that the main problem with the fuel pump is the relay, they decided they no longer fancy the job of running the car and burn out. ok heres a trick to make sure its that before you spend a good 75£ for a new one.

On the escort rs turbo if you get yourself some speaker wire, and use both wires for them remove your rear bumper numberplate light, place that inside the power of conection, so place inside the plug and bring the cable(speak wire) back on its self to your able to re-plug it back on.

Then feed it under the car and to the fuel pump, there should be a wire leeding to the fuel pump colour YELLOW. and do the same, put your side lights on then your fuel pump should prime all the time, fire up the car and you will then know that the relay is FOOKED.

enjoy

Or just bridge the relay connector directly?

Do you always carry a probe when you are driving? such as a little distance? didnt think so, its just an easy fix to get you home.. not everyone has a probe so it also works

to be honest i don't understand the point of this, just buy a bit of wire and if you think the relay is fooked, just power it off the battery directly to test, not a big task is it.

all this proves is there was no power getting to the pump... and by using speaker wire it is.... This could be many things other than relay.... it could be a wiring problem on the fuel pump side of the relay... ie broken wire etc... or if you have an alarm which has a fuel pump cut it could be the alarm etc.... A fuel pump draws a lot more power than a number plate bulb... especially if there's a problem with the pump(which may cause relays and wiring to burn out) so by doing you little trick it may damage other curcuits. I personally would bridge the relay(at least that curcuit is protected by the correct ampage fuse and has the correct guage wiring too, if this works pick up a relay on my way home.... or do what i used to do when i had one... and fit the spare relay which is in the glovebox...

To be honest I don't know ANYONE who carries speaker wire with them or would be willing to rip their car apart just for the sake of this 'test'

Hows it going to burn out the wiring? Unless you were driving for days on end with it bodged. But for test purposes it wouldn't do any harm! Anyway coming from someone who's advised using speaker wire to perform electrical tests, thats a bit rich

it is also a fix to get you home,

FFS, this wont burn out your light fusses or anything, and is a power source from the fuel pump, why would you need to rip the car apart? when you could just use the speaker wite in the boot? or any electircal wire to get you home? quick test?

it takes no longer than 2minutes , and BTW! If you plug it to the battery the fuel pump will run all the time, if you bridge the relay then you could burn more than just that part of wirning.

its not a way of stealing a car as you still need to by pass the alarm system, the alarm has nothing todo with the fuel layout, unless you have a set 1 tracking system.

thats it you spend about 30miutes feeding a wirer from your battery to the rear of the car when you could do it my way to have a temp fix untill it can be re wired.

its not hard its only 2 conections. side lights on and walla your gone.

And the Lights have a two way fuse system, the relays and the Fuese box!

you bridge the conection on the fuel pump relay it wont have a fuse to blow/relay to blow other than every other one..

LMFAO

It'll still have the normal fuel pump fuse to blow (not that it would). Anyway im not going to argue. I've done it my way many times (thanks to shoddy relays) and i still have a wiring loom. It takes half a minute max to drop the connector and bridge it. Next time i see someone wiring up there lights to their fuel pump with speaker wire, i'll think of you

Best Thing to do is just collect and many of these pink fuel relay switch as you can as I'v been caught by this twice, so I always carry a box in my glovebox a spare relays and fuse of the car, of all of them, and in my workshop, shit loads of each one.

we all have our way of going about things i suppose. if you bridge the relay when it has no other fuel to be blown? other than burning out all your wires.

Best cure is to pre empt the problem by simply wiring in a seperate circuit to the pump so it is fed from position 2 through a fuel(impact) cut off switch, it then runs all the time in 2 unless impacted/crashed will take but a second to prime.
This is what I used to do on the k jet systems.

I do MADS wiring & am interested if the pump sounds better when using speaker wire.
Why not get a decent meter for Christmas & save your speaker wire for your stereo.
